I just put a locker in the front of the jeep, I have installed lockers before but for some reason when you turn it, it seems like there is a spool up front, from what I have been told, you are suppose to put the side gear thrust washers between the carrier and the lockers side gear, is this correct, other than that I know everything is installed correctly, I have never had a front locker, so maybe this is how it is supposed to be

What type of locker is it?

I assume since you are talking about thrust washers you installed a locker that replaced the spider gears only right?

If so I have one up front and it does not do that. I have an ez-locker that I installed along time ago. I can not remember if I left the thrust washers in it or not. It seems to me for some reason that I did not. I have the box at home with my spider gears in it. I will open it and see what all is there tonight if I remember.

you were supposed to reuse the thrust washers, i did on mine and it has never done liek that, even when brand new

but i also think that there was a section in the instructions(who uses those things, right?) that went over making sure there was the correct amount of space between the couplers, but what i cannot remember is what you would do if there wasnt enough

I wish I could tell you how it came apart but I didn't take it out. It was on the bench when he did it. Like I told you it was given to me and I didn't take it out. It did work fine prior to it coming out. If you PM Booger (might be boogercj7) on here he might be able to give some insight. He was the one that actually took it out and made it look easy. Hope it works out though.

What kind of Jeep are we talking about? If it's a CJ and the hubs are unlocked, then the locker shouldn't have any effect what so ever. if it's a CJ and the hubs are locked, and you are turning with you foot on the gas, then yes it will act like a spool since it is 100% locked up.

if this is in something like an XJ, that doesn't have locking hubs, then even when it's not in 4x4 it will cause the steering to be heavy.

I just installed a LockRight in the front of my CJ5. i know i reused the thrust washers.

cheers,
bigmac

It is an xj, and I did a little research and found out that I am suppose to use th washers, I am going to pull it out tomorrow to see if I might have installed it wrong or something, I got it used with no instructions, and I was going off memory from when I put one in my 9in which was installed completly differently since it has a split carrier. It has some sort of vacuum disconnect, not for the hubs, but it disconects the pass side shaft.

Hey,

i agree that it's always important to make sure things are properly installed.

however

with your tcase in 2wd and the axle disconnect "unlocked", the locker should not effect your steering, even if it wasn't unlocking like it should. the binding comes when BOTH front tires are forced to turn at the same speed. if the axle disconnect is working properly, then that shouldn't happen. I would inspect your vac. disc. to ensure it hasn't gotten stuck in the locked position.

cheers,
bigmac

I did not think that all XJ's had an axle disconnect.

I don't have the problem in 2wd, just in 4wd. and it is almost impossible to drive on the street, I pulled out of my driveway, and could hardly make the turn onto the street, I backed up and decided not to drive it, I must have something installed wrong, I found some installation instructions of the web and downloaded them, the instructions are a little different from how I put it in, so I will be pulling it back out and following the instructions step by step.

in 4wd on the gas...it will bind in a corner. if it ratchets normally in 2wd its probably in right. Even on dirt, on the trail they will want to bind in a sharp turn. although, i'm not sure if the vac disconnect will change this.

oh, i didnt know you were on pavement in 4wd, thats bad news with a front locker, doesnt drive worth a shit, but as long as it feels ok in 2wd i think youre fine

Heck, my Ranger does that with open diffs. You shouldn't be in 4wd on pavement anyway.

If you left the side washers out, it would actually unlock more easily.

again thanks for the info guys, i really appreciate it, just to clarify so people don't think I am stupid, I was going to drive the jeep to a restaurant to pick up some grease for my diesel using the jeep which is about a 30sec drive, I only put it in 4wd to see if I could hear the locker clicking, needless to say, it was impossible to turn, and I decided to take the bronco instead, the bronco is much faster and fun to play arround with anyways.
