Anyone have any input on d30 27 spline lockers?

Spartan vs. Aussie vs. Lock-right?

Not a daily driver, but still driven on the street quite a bit. Will be driven on snow, but will probably upgrade to an ARB or OX before winter comes again. Or just skip the lunchbox locker and wait til I can afford to do the ARB?

Rear is dana 44 with detroit locker and 4.88 gearing.

I have three Spartan lockers and have been pleased with them so far. Different strokes for different folks but I recommend the lunchbox style for cost effectiveness, ease of installation and reliability. Just my .02.

Save the ARB $$$ for when/if you upgrade to a stronger front axle later. Any of the lunch box lockers will do fine. I will say that the Spartan is the better deal since it comes with the hardened cross pin and is easier to install.

The "lunch box" style locker will work great for what your wanting to do, The cost of the ARB is not worth the gain, thats just my opinion. Every one uses there Jeep for different things.

The Assuie, Spartan, and Lock Rite are all very close in design.

I have had very good luck out of mine, works great on and off road.

Don't overthink it, drop in a lunchbox locker and roll on. I've used the LockRight in 2 D30's, one CJ with lockout hubs and my DD XJ without lockouts...no issues there.

I can't even tell my Aussie is up there untill I drop it in 4wd. I had this conundrum and went with the Aussie b/c the reviews stated it had the best "on road attitude" and that's where I'm at 90% of the time.

i love the aussie in the front of my HP30 on my TJ. No issues what so ever. For a long time mine was even my DD still, but like I said no issues.

I've owned two Lock Rights. No problems out of either one.

I currently run a lockrite in my YJ love it and have had no problems. I can not even tell it is there until I put it in 4wd.

I've run aussie's and lockrite's. both behave pretty much the same on and off road. prefer the aussie cause it's slightly easier to install.

I'm running a lockrite and have had no problems with it. If I were in the market for a dana 30 locker now though I would go with the Spartan since it is a little easier to install cheaper and includes the crosspin.

I've got a spartan in the rear of my jeep, so far I haven't an issue with it and it has performed excellent. The only time I notice it is when I am turning and your hear it ratching. Never had a lockrite or Aussie so I can't compare the three but the Spartan makes a good bit of noise when it is ratcheting. I get asked all the time if I have a bad CV joint, of course this is by people who don't know TJ's don't have CV shafts.

So will a lunchbox style locker keep one wheel "dead" when accelerating in snow and Ice conditions? I figured they'd lock up causing both tires to spin? Say, if it were a DD that got driven on wintertime roads.

If its in 4x4, it had better lockup both wheels...otherwise its broken or not installed properly :shaking:

just save your money and get 30 spline shafts and 30 spline locker! cause you know once you lock the front its bye bye front shafts!

aussie is what i got, i use to drive mine all the time on the road never tried anything else but aussie does not engage until its in 4wd so it will ride the same on the road as it does now arb would be a waste of money cause your just going to turn the arb on when you put it in 4wd anyways so it just doesnt seem pracital to me

I had an aussie in my d30 for a long time (as well as my 8.8). never let me down. I did eventually snap a couple of shafts, but they were both odd situations.
first time wheel was turned and it came down fast and snapped.
second time my ball joint ripped out and took the axle shaft etc with it.

I run a lock-rite in my HP30 with Nitro 4340 shafts and 760x u-joints with full circle clips, on 36" IROKs. Haven't broken anything *yet*, hoping I don't anytime soon though. I've put a lot of work into my HP30 to make sure it doesn't break.

I'll be the odd guy... Detroit EZ (their version of the lunchbox locker) has been in 2 front axles and continues to do well.

Hoping Chase or Zubz will chime in as they've collectively seen a buttload of these and wondering if I'm way off base here:

IMO, the most critical determination is the internal case dimensions...
- too tight & it won't ratchet (= spool)
- too loose (like when the side shims are "left out" )and it'll shuck/round the teeth rapidly
