I'm looking to rebuild & regear (4:1) the D300 I picked up this summer over the winter. How do I know if its a short or long version?

As quoted from Novak... "There are two essential versions of the Jeep 300. The 1980 version had a shorter (about 3-1/2") rear output housing assembly. The 1981 and later versions had a longer output assembly (about 5-1/2") to house the larger, eccentric style speedometer driven gear and its driving gear, integrated into the output shaft itself."
 
Please correct me if I'm wrong. It's my understanding that 1980 CJs were the only Jeeps that came with the short output housing ....and everything else about the Dana 300 is the same.

I've been considering doing the same thing in the near future.

my 81 CJ5 had a short tail housing. I owned it for years but it could have been swapped out by a previous owner and the driveshaft lengthened. It looked factory.


the short tailhousing has a rear 32 spline output option but its really expensive. If you have room, it'll be much cheaper to use the long output D300 if you ever decide to upgrade the outputs. I wanted the 32 spline outputs. It was ceaper to sell my sort tailhousing D300 and pick up a good used long tailhousing one and go with the more affordable rear output upgrade. I had room, but if you don't, then the short output may be your only option.

Thanks all! Called JB Conversions and another way to tell is that the long version uses a fork to hold the speedometer gear in.
