I just got my d44 under my broncoII and want to lock the front, I don't have alot of money, so I was thinking of getting a mini spool since it is like 200 bucks cheaper. Would a mini spool be fine off road if I left 1 hub unlocked until things got rough and I could get out and lock it, or is it worth the money for the locker. Has anyone don the leave one hub unlocked thing, if so how does it perform on the trail steering wise when both are locked

I ran a spool in an offroad only truck with a d44 and it seemed like every 50 feet I drove with both hubs locked I was changing an axle. so I wouldnt suggest doing it unless you had chromoly axles and then I would probly still be nervous about it. so if was me I would spend a few extra dollors and save yourself alot of son of a _____ and mother ______ and  :kaioken: and so on
hope this helps & good luck

Ran a welded front ,'bout the same as a spool, for a year. Steering was horrendous, hydro assist helped but it was still a bear turning at times, it just pushes the front through the turn instead of letting it differentiate and turn. Finally gave up and put a lockrite in, good price from DC4x4 on this board. I try to do everything on the cheap but wish I had just gotten the lockrite in the first place.

and since Aussie lockers aren't much over $200 (assuming they have one for your application)...that's the best option...

that, or some other brand of lunchbox locker...

If you've got a stock <3.9 carrier then just weld it, it's worthless anyway...it's not as bad as some people make it out to be honestly and when you're stuck in the middle of the night it's nice to actually have a locked front end at the turn of a hub...
