Never seen this type before. Was wondering if anybody knew anything about them. Outer nut uses three little set screws to engage locking plate. Not sure I like this style.

Never seen them but I'd bet the outer nut originally had pointed set screws that went against the inner nut to lock it in place.

That style was very common on early Jeeps (D25/D27/D30) that used the WARN "Lock-O-Matic" locking hubs... which would either lock once front axle was engaged (at TC) and slippage occurred or could be manually spun to lock. I believe the radiused outer nut contacted the hub guts to actuate... worked great on my Comnmando, but in the auto position, will UNlock in reverse

They will get tight as the inner nut has pins to lock the washer and the set screws lock the outer nut inside the washer.
They were kinda "rare" as many have been mangled by folks thinking they accepted a spanner and/or used a punch attempting to loosen them before realizing/seeing there are set screws... but are being made supplied again by Walck's

So they would have come with the hubs? I thought the hubs looked pretty old. That explains it. Thanks CaverDave

I just rebuilt my front end.
On my ranger the narrower of the two goes on first at 17 ft lbs

Then the washer pin facing outward.

Then the second spindle nut at 150 ft lbs.

It's been a while since I've done a d44, but pretty sure the washer pin goes inward, and aligns with a hole in the inner nut. Otherwise the outer nut would just shear it off when torqueing. Common mistake and why many washers are missing pins.

the d25 in my willys had these when I first tore everything down.

Nut 1 goes on first, pin facing out, and sets bearings. Dodge FSM says 50ftlb, loosen and retighten to 31-39ftlb, then loosen 135-150*. Washer 2 goes on second, there is a tab (circled green) that lines up with the grove in the spindle. The pin on nut 1 should fall in a hole in the washer. Then nut 3 goes on at 50ftlb. Nut 3 keeps washer 2 tight against nut 1. The tab on washer 2 locking into the spindle and the pin on nut 1 should keep nut 1 from moving and letting the bearings get loose. I've never had a Dodge with the set screw style nuts so no specs for the screws, but I like the idea as added insurance against the nuts moving.

You're right. I knew the pin and washer aligned with the inner nut.
