I have a Dana 30 in my xj now, its got 4.88 gears, a spartan locker, and cromo shafts. I have 35s and don't plan on going any bigger than that on the xj.
Would it be worth it to change in and regear a waggy 44 and lock it, probably won't add cromos for a while if I did the swap. So comparing a "built" 30 to a stock waggy 44. Is the swap worth the extra money and time?

No, unless you really beat on it hard. The d44 will have stronger housing and knuckles, and a little larger ring gear. But if youre not currently trashing ring gears and bending housings, I'd stick with the D30.

Most I've done so far is brake the cross pin and it was most likely not a hardened pin

what ^^^said plus D30s are dime a dozen so much easier and cheaper to replace/have spares for. just my 2cents, with new HD U-joints (spicers i guess are top of line), don't turn all the way when hitting it, and just in general keep the rpms below 4k, even without chromos or alloys you should hardly ever break it on 35s....especially if your not running boggers or the like. even more so if you're running the bigger joint D30 unlike me i love the Disco but even those puny joints still can take a beating if kept greased.
Question? I am very very very intrigued at how you broke the center pin in your 30...and many others keep breaking them in the 8.25s? i'm just asking for curiosity because of how many guys in the 2trips i've taken to the Flats now have broken their 8.25 center pin and now you say ur front broke. trying to figure out what they all have in common...tire size, difficulty when broke, gear size, lockers, limited slips,

I'm not sure how I broke it, I wasnt being any harder on it then I usually am ( although trip before last I had just gotten chromos and was trying to warranty them on first trip). I think it probably had alot to do with the axles not being took care of before I got them, as Jody can attest to.... Also don't think it was a hardened cross pin like it should have had.
For reference I'm on 35s locked front and rear front had a lockright, 4.88s and I was on zig zag at the flats. Although I believe it broke right AFTER the hardest part of the trail.

well cool btw, how is Zig Zag..and any other reds you have done on 35s. trying to figure out what reds are doable for 35s for this next trip...

It was pretty tuff when it was dry woudlbt even think about it wet. I don't know the name of the trails but ive done all but a few and far right side of the park. If I think I can get into it, I'm trying it

sorry to hijack ur thread: what red trials are def a no no as far as "rocks". that is my biggest drawback is rocks/boulders lol. if it's dirt, i will tackle it but i'm trying to find out what reds have big boulders that would keep be from doing it without a winch. is the Ledge on Rock Ledge as bad as i hear or did you do it ok.
