for the rear output shaft on a dana 300, are there any differences in strength? or is it just the length, speedometer stuff, and bolt pattern that is different?
or is there anything else two know about the differences in the two?
(also, does anyone know if it would be fairly easy to swap in all the long output shaft stuff into a dana 300 case that was made for the short one?)

thanks, chris

its hard to find if any are made aftermarket output shafts, the shortshaft was made i think one or two year 80 or 81, I steer clear of them. If you run with it an crack the output housing you cannot change it over to a long shaft its different bolt pattern on the housing. They are not easy to come by, Advance adaptors makes a replacement kit if you brake the housing, its a total upgrade on the splines but it will set you back $500.

pbb rumor is that the short output is the same as a D20. I had 2 that I sold and it did have the smaller threaded in speedo gear. and IMHO did look similer to a d20.. Without having them side/side hard to be 100% sure.. (d20 output is cast iron.. )

Other rumors are that a D20 32spline kit being made to work etc..

But while they are different they do share 3-4 bolts and some people have redrilled the case to install the longer tail on it. Search pbb lots of pics...
