So I think I want to use a Dana 300 vs. np231. Good case yes/no (D300)? I want to put it behind a 700R4 and a Mod built 350 SBC, 300-350 HP range. D44/14bolt 8 lugs

I have found a couple, both are from 1980 model jeeps. In researching them it is my understanding that they are a bit shorter than the 81-86 years, 10 1/2" vs. 11 5/8. Is this a big deal? Do you use SYE with this type of TC. Is one better than the other as far as year or length? Also I want to add twin sticks, good idea? Any other insite or advise would be greatly appreciated. I hope I have included enough info about what I want to do to help make a choice. Thank you

What kind of rig, and what will it be used for? What gears in the axles? If this is a trail rig, I would use a 231 crawl box and the 300. I would diff do the twin stick conversion.

I have a 80's d300 that has lives behind a 700r and a 350tbi/now 6.0 in a biggish trail/street CJ. Twin stick it, put in a HD rear output shaft kit and go play. The only thing that Ive broken so far was the rear output and I got things all bound up when it happened- hence the HD rear output shaft now. The rear output shaft body is what is making your case lengths different so this will be a mute point once the rear output is upgraded as the snout with bearing spacing is what is driving this difference. Call Advance Adapters about this info even if you dont buy from them to see if there is any strength difference in gears/case/ratios etc.
When you do the twin stick, put in the bigger spring on the shift rails to hold the front in gear, they like to pop out of gear when you install the twin stick- you'll have it all apart anyway. Great tcase and enough low range gear with my automatic. Easy to completely tear down and work on. Ive got nothing but love for it. Now the 231, thats for someone else to chat up. Ive even got a couple sets of internals if you lose something if/when you do this so if you fling something across the shop, give me a shout, Ive got extras.

THe 300 is an excellent case. No, it does not need an SYE, as there is no slip yoke to eliminate. One think to kep in mind, is that (unless you flip it) the 300 front output is passenger side drop.
