i have a question about setting up the carrier shims... i have scout II dana's, the shims go behinde the carrier bearings as many of you know.. i have seen some dana's that the shims go between the race and the axle ... so my question is can you not do this with scout axles? can you not get the backlash tight enough... is why they go behinde the bearing? ive tried to search it on the net but cant find anything...
thanks in advance guys

Most dana's shim under the bearing until the newer stuff and they moved to outside of the race. The housing is narrow on the scout, so under the bearing there is only .050 maximum of shims on each side so running outside spacers that thin is hard to work with and get the carrier in tight. And if one side has.050 then the opposite side could be as little as .015 you don't want to run an outside shim that thin.

if the housing was wider allowing more room for thicker outside shims in the .076 and up range then using outside shims is fine.

that particular axle needs to be shimmed under the bearing. new set up bearings (bearings honed out to allow them to slide on and off) could help you and of course there is a super sweet tool that pops them off. and of course we sell both.
