Quadra-Jet VS Holley Truck Avenger

Backwards, forwards of either?

This is about two carbs, please, leave FI and Propane out of it

The truck avenger doesn't even compare to the q-jet offroad. Backwards or forwards is debateable but backwards is definately better for bouncing up steep inclines. (for qjets).

(And 'pane owns both offroad)

well i don't know if this is gonna help much or not, but i ran a q-jet backwards with rebuilt jets, and it was awesome, it was as close to fuel injection as you can get.

the only think lacking with it IMO was power, and the ability to open up the secondaries like i would have liked to. also, tuning it was a real pain. but for reliablilty in steep and off camber situations, it was awesome.

the downside to writing all this is that i dont know anything about the truck avenger.

my q-jet was on a basically stock 350, and was set up accordingly.

I've run a Truck Avenger on my SBC for about 2 years now. I have fooled around with it a bit and have it set where it performs almost like fool-injection. This past weekend at Superlift ORV I took any trail I wanted....some bouncy some pretty steep and it cut off twice....both times because I let it idle down too low. When I commented that is what happens with a carb sometimes the guys I was wheel'n with couldn't believe I was running a carb on the trails we were on. (they were all fuel-injected and some of their crap kept cutting out frequently)

THe trick it to set your idle where it will work for you on the trail (idle up for inclines and so on...at least that is what has worked for me...btw I run an auto tranny too).

IMO the Truck Avenger can't be beat for bolt on and forget Carb performance offroad.

Most any carb will run fine on a steep hill or offcamber. What really tests it is when you're bouncing up a hill, or drop off a ledge--etc etc. None of these are times when you want to lose power steering or brakes. These are also the times where the rochesters really outperform all others. And it definately has to do with how both carbs are built. The truck avenger is nothing but a slightly modified vac secondary street avenger...

properly tuned (this is key... they're not the easiest to dial in) q-jet backwards.

q-jet...backwards. Float level slightly above normal, extend the float vent, and run it at 1-1.5 psi from a good flowing pump, and it will love you.

I'm not real familar with either setup but, are there jet extensions available for the avenger? In order to give the thing a little more time on hard accel the drag carbs run extensions. I altered a set for a weber on a 20r and it worked great.

I built a Holley 4776 600cfm double pumper. I blueprinted all the circiuts, installed off road needle and seat assy., rear jet extentions, and made a vent similar to a T/A. I'll put my Holley up against a Q-jet any day. My carb is crisp and responsive not to mention reliable. Though the 600 cfm is on the edge of being too large for a stock 302, it should really shine on my 393W.
