Welding in loafers. I hear you man. I have burnt the sheat outta my ankles welding with shorts and no socks. I want to see some after the derby pics please. ;)

Which derby is this...we are thinking of hitting the one at Dixie Classic on Friday night (watching, NOT participating)

I especially like the welding right next to the battery thing.

You R lucky you still have all your body parts attached.

Might be a dumb question - but what is all the stuff (black box with white tube) in the front, and what's with the chain?

yup... me, ed, and nick will be there again this year. a buick wagon and a pontiac bonneville sedan for the big cars. pinto (oh this thing is going to destroy some econo boxes) and a cavalier sedan for the 4 cylinders. gotta get up to richard's (thecarman) and get a trans in our wagon and get the pinto running.

I'm planning to hit this one too.
I like the "small car" class, it's cool since they're all front wheel drive they seem to last longer - whole back end of vehicle can fall off beforo stops moving, hehe.

the black box is a welder. and the chains are to keep flying parts from the driver. thats not me welding, thats my partner matt "slayer" anderson

Wait till you see the big cars at this one. Some big car heats that get the good drivers in them (who know how to drive, and have good cars) last over 20 min. It's so sweet to see mid-70s GMs and Dodges beating the crap out of each other until the trunk is gone and the front end is bent up at a 45-degree angle so you can see the engine under the front bumper. It's surprising how long a well-built big car can run - how smashed it can really get and still be moving around the track.

But people who don't know how to prep the big cars seem to get taken out quick by stupid stuff, like wiring or an engine that doesn't run good. I hate to see a car sitting out on the track with hardly a dent in it, and it's already over - that's not entertainment! :)

The small cars do last a long time - it's cool to see the back-end packed to where it's just two front tires on the ground dragging the rest of the car around. Most small cars are easier to prep, since they are fuel injected you don't have to do much to the engine for them to run good and not cut off all the time, so they stay in it longer. But I hate it when a small car gets hit in the front wheel and breaks a tie-rod or CV-joint and is done right away - that's no fun!!! :) I wish there was an ***easy*** way for the front-drive cars to weld their front diff, so that losing a front tire wasn't as big of a deal.

Yeah I guess welding a diff in FWD means pullin apart the tranny, huh. Too much work for a car that is doomed anyway.
Downside to the Debry at the DC fair is that the space/track isn't all that huge, not a whole lot of room to navigate around in teh big cars once you get 20 of them in there.
I saw one at Bowman Grey a few years ago, that was cool, lots more space to pick up speed etc.

Yes, Bowman Grey - HOLY CRAP those derbies were awesome! Being on asphalt, those cars really got up some speed. Cars with built engines and low gears, smoking both rear tires towards impact. Both cars would come off the ground when they hit!!!

Actually womorrow night they have "figure 8 racing", that should be interesting although I'll miss it. Who crazy idea was this, hm, lets drive really fast w/ am inevitable collision point that will cause a big pileup....

what in the world???

When is this DD tonight? What can you do when no traction and street tires on mud. it will be a turtle crawl mess.

It was at 7:30. I bailed b/c it was raining buckets, not worth it to me. Soggy fair just sucks, only thing smellier than Carnies are soggy Carnies!

Some dodge neons have a bolt on diff cover...Just food for thought.
