I have a 98 XJ. 355 gears. im gettin an axle out of an older xj with 307 gears (buddy pulled. its free)(dont know much about). has the engage and disengage switch? will update. I need to put in a 355 gear setup in the axle. im using my spindles and setup. everything other than the axlehousing and gears im reusing. shafts, brakes, hubs, spindles. etc.
I need to figure out how to do this without diKing anything up.
backlash, any adjustments to keep from destroying a new to me axle and gears.
I want to keep this axle because of the engae disengage switch. im goin to end up welding spider gears.
helpppp and point me in the right direction please!!

im confused as to why you are doing this !
your 98 hp30 is a much better axle due to it being non disco and 297 u-joints as compared to a older disco axle that has small 260 joints and a pos axle disconnect.
if your trying to do this just so you can weld the spiders and it still turn all i can say is good luck cause it's gonna eat shafts and joints plus if you do drive on the road it may even pull to the left due to the extra drag from the carrier and gears being pulled by the left axle.
but to answer your question about swapping gears you will need to check the pattern and take note of what the backlash is set at before you remove the gears that you plan on reusing and set them up just the same.

is there any way i can just make it so theres manual locking hubs? will that make it so it doesnt engage the axle?

Not really manual hubs without a lot of work/$

But some folks make a posi cable instead of the vacuum disco and use to control the front that so they can be welded but still steer.

I'd suggest just getting a 3.55 axle out of any 97+, non abs XJ. no disco and the right gear ratio for way cheaper than you could swap gears into that disco housing, and it'll come with a spare set of big joint shafts. Shouldn't run more than about 150 for a complete.

ok so im putting the gears in friday on the older axle. then swapping spindles and putting hubs on it. i still need to figure out the engage/disengage setup whether cable or vacuum and how it wont pull if i weld the gears.

Not sure how you're just going to "swap spindles." Only way I've heard of getting manual hubs on a D30 is the warn kit or swapping stuff off an old CJ axle, but if I remember correctly you gotta swap everything from the knuckles out, which is a lot of work to never address any of the 30s weak links...

I'll say it again- $150 at a pull-a-part should have you an axle that's literally bolt up and drive, stronger shafts, etc.

Or you can put all the work you want into it, and I think the hp30 is a good axle but I've grenaded an open-diff, big-joint hp30 on 33x12.50s.

In the end, you're still gonna have a D30. Welded. With small joints. Not saying don't do it or anything like that. Just saying I think there's better places to put your effort.

I agree with archduke...seems like a lot of work to make a welded D30 work. I think you'd be better getting a non-disconnect HPD30 (95-99XJ), they are a dime-a-dozen and 99% will be 3.55. Drop a $200 lockright in and you'll be done.

same idea as replacing balljoints? take both out and the spindle comes off. then i can use my same brake system. ill check em all out and see whats the best bet.

thanks for the extra info tho

haha. yea sorry. got mixed up on words when i was writing it. but yea ima be workin on that most of the day tomorrow. hopefully taking it to freeman park saturday.

dont weld it take the plate off push the collar over to engaged position flip plate over bolt back on. it will hold it in the locked position if upside down no vac, or cable needed just engage the dshaft with the case like normal.
save $ buy a aussie, lockright or spartan. $225-$275

yea. im gonna end up just getting a lockrite or aussie. not quite sure yet. but i want something. and of course gotta rebuild the differential. ill most likely just rebuild the whole axle. the d-30 with the vacuum setup is temporary. just gotta save up some extra cash.
