My dogs keep digging out of the yard and I have tryed and tryed to keep them in and cant. One got out last fall and got hit so trying to keep from going through that again it is just too hard. Well got a new stray yesterday and she is a digger to so need to stop this. A guy at work told me that I could use a electric fence likt they use for goats and put it about 4" above the ground and that should stop them. I just want to see if anyone has any other ideas and also where can I get some electric fence and whats it cost I have a 75' by 30' yard.
Thanks
I will post some pics of the new dog later I want to see what you guys think she is mixed with. We are calling her Tix because when I found her she was covered in ticks. I pulled off about 50 tonight and I am sure that there are some more that I missed.
My sister in law got married yesterday and the dog showed up at the rehearsal dinner. A guy that was working next door said he was going to take it to a friends house but when we left to go home the dog was running down the road about 3 miles from where we were. So I picked her up and took her home just could not leave her. Sad that someone could just let a dog out and leave it in the road.

about $50 at lowes. Make sure you get at least an 8' ground rod & connect it to the exhisting fence.

Just put some ground cayenne pepper (2-3 tablespoons) in the holes, then cover 'em up with dirt.

Please note: use some common sense with the above statement.

I have done that but they still go at it like is not there

do what i did to mine.

Cut their front feet off.

KIDDING!!!!

pile their own crap in the holes and along the fence line.

I put an underground fence in for my old dog.....I got it from TSC and it didn't work worth a shit. Certain places he could walk right over and never flench. Other places he would fly all to hell barking and acting like it was killing him. I took all the crap back and got my money back. I ended up just keeping him indside.

They are outside dogs but I am talking about a electric fence like for livestock not the underground one that is made for dogs

I have/had a jumper, he'd climb the fence, used a small buzz box cattle fence, has worked for 8 years now. no issues since, even with it off. he still checks it once inawhile, but he's learned, it's ALWAYS ON. Works on drunken neighbors, small children and unsuspecting visiting friends as well !! ( Ask Rob !! )

got everyhting I needed from TSC ( Tractor Supply Co. )

When I was a kid, we had two dogs that always wanted out of the fence. We lived in town and our whole back yard was fenced in. We had to have a wire over the top, and one at the bottom. The electric fence will burn through grass, but too much will ground it out and make it dead. We always took round up and sprayed directly under it to keep the grass from growing up into it. You can use about anything to run the wire on, you just have to make sure to contact point is non conductive. A metal rod with electric tape wrapped about it, a PVC pipe, or glass works well. For points where you will need to disconnect sometimes like gates, they sell things that will work for that too. TSC is your best bet, but most places that sell feed and cattle supples usually stock what you need too.

Is it a above kennel or actual chain link around the yard? We bought a new house and bought 2 kennels from Lowes and put them together. Then I took some weld wire and laid on the ground under them and wired the weld wire together and to the bottom of the kennel. Finally we put cedar shavings in the lot and he hasn't been out of it yet. At our old house I built a 5ft high chain link fence with 6ft chainlink and had a foot in the ground. He never got out of that either.

I don't know what your yard looks like, but you can take the green rolls of garden fencing (about 3'tall) and lay it across the ground up against the fence they are digging around. Obviously it'll need to be staked down and attached to the existing fence.

The dogs can't dig through this stuff. After time, grass will grow through it and it'll never be noticable.

I've never done it before, but the house I just purchased had it around the dog pen from the previous owner and it worked really well.

I built our pen using 3' picket fence panels from sLowes...then used the 3' green vinyl coated garden fencing (like rockcity was talking about) to line the inside of the fence....I attached it at the top horizontal 2X3 of the fence and folded it at the bottom to lay on the ground.

Used a crown stapler to nail the metal fence to the picket fence. You cant really see the metal fence inside the picket fence...and the dog cant dig under.

Done it and it works great. My new Lab doesnt try to get out, but our old Pit/Boxer dug all the time until this trick

That garden fence idea sounds like a good one. Bags of Quick-crete in trenches broke the beagle of his digging habits.

My dog is uncontainable. I put up an invisible fence and she runs right through it. I put up a steel cable runner and she has broken it about 4 times. I kept her in a kennel and she would deficate all in it. Finally I said the hell with it and turned her loose and she stays around the house for the most part. I dont have traffic to deal with though

one dog will not go anywhere but the other not to sure about but also like in the city so they cant run loose

I had the same problem with my border collie, she would jump a 4ft tall fence, so I upped it to 5' and 6' and she kept on doing it.

I have a eletric fence box and plenty of left over wire PM me for a price.

What if your dog likes rolling in its own :poop:? Like MTsoulos said, the dog will not stay put. :poop:ed in the house so we put it on the porch. :poop:ed on the porch so we put it in a kennel on the porch. :poop:'ed in the kennel so we put it outside on the steel cable runner. Broke loose outta that and :poop:'ed in some pants Mike had laying around (no lie ha ha). Put in electric fence, after walking her around the fence w/ flags up for her to understand that the beeping would shock her, she would run from end to end getting shocked as if she was on fire, howling this God awful sound the whole way. Went back to the runner idea. She would pull so hard the steel cable would pull out of the tree and splinter. Attached the second cable to a hand winch attached to the tree. That worked until we took target practice (not at the dog) and accidentally shot the cable.. Twice.. In the same place..

So the runner Idea has worked best so far, we cant give her too much room on the leash b/c she will try to get under the house and tear off the siding. She digs holes too. She was doing fine running around the neighborhood but now the neighbors are growing restless... Bad thing is, our dog looks alot like this one, so you may have your hands full!

The underground fence only works if you spend a month or two training the dog. Since you already have a fence it would be a waste of time.

The plastic fencing on the ground sounds like a cool solution. I also like the electric fence idea. This is what I am going to do once I get some money. It will be to keep the dog in. She isn't a jumper and doesn't try to escape, but the kids next door are pretty bad.
