OK, I got a '73 CJ-5 with narrowtrack D30. 5 on 5.5.

What's the cheap and easy route to front discs? Later model D30 outers? Ford truck D44 outers?

Thought about it, but I don't see much need to go to a D44 as want to keep this a NT, and I've run 33's since 1986 on this axle, and don't beat up on it, so not worried about breakage.

easyest way? not sure on that but if you go with the newer modle make sure you get knuckels cause the drum brake knuckels are a little different & you will have to gring on them

Hahaha, "easy" being a relative term. Maybe I should have said quick and painless -- I got the shop, tools, everything to do whatever, but time to get stuff done is at a premium now.

Find a '78-'79 cj 30, if you can.
It is all bolt on with the 6 bolt caliper bracket.
You will have to grind the knuckle slightly to get the caliper to move through it's entire range of motion.

Here is one write up. Click me

Caver Dave has a better write up on Trailforge.com, but, like most of Dave's junk, its not working right now.

Easiest?
just keep your eyes open.
I picked up a complete disc NT30 on here a few months back for $30. In my case it was geared right.
if not you would at least have everything you need.

My '76 CJ-5 came with drum brakes and manual steering. Swapped in front axle from a '78 CJ along with the P/S system. Works great.

I have a pair of 30 knuckles that might work for you. I'm not sure what they came off of though. I might be able to get some pics for you. Let me know in a pm.

A common swap on earlier enclosed knuckles delt with pulling parts off the front of half ton chevy trucks.Go to the cj3b site or earlycj5 and look the write ups up.They talk like it's fairly easy and cheap also. If I didn't want to keep with my stock rims,I might have done that swap instead of putting 11 inch drums on my M38. I know your front is open knuckled with ball joints instead of king pins but the work should still be the same I would think.
