My wife and I have a love/hate relationship with the SFWDA Dixie Run event. I love to go and she hates for me to! Actually, she really doesn’t mind my going; it’s just that Dixie Run always falls on her birthday, which causes us to have to compromise. The compromise involves me being able to go every other year while we celebrate her birthday the other years. This year was my year to “stay home” but I was able to negotiate a few days of wheeling as long as I was home for the weekend. With negotiations complete, I headed up Tuesday of Dixie Run week for some early wheeling before heading back for Saturday’s birthday celebration.

Several NC4x4 members had planned to get in some early wheeling before the crowds gathered on the weekend and when I got to the camp Tuesday, upnover (Chip Price), 3DKRAWLER (David Minton), Larry Smith and Greg Slade were already there ready to go. Larry was sporting his new/used motor home with all the amenities including queen size bed in the master suite and generator power. David had purchased Larry’s old gooseneck/slide-in-camper combo and he and Beth were really happy with their new accommodations. Greg Slade’s group of 4 rigs was camped at the far end of the field with a setup consisting of full portable kitchen complete with sink and running water and LOUD Led Zeppelin music! Chip had his usual Taj MaPrice set up and that’s where most of the lies were told during the week.

Just a quick aside about Chip. Those of you who believe in God’s healing power please keep Chip in your prayers. Tuesday night he experienced acute chest pain due to a hiatal hernia he has. Those that know Chip well, know that Dixie Run is THE EVENT of the year for him and he had been pointing toward it all summer, so it wasn’t unusual to see him mount up in upnover for Wednesday’s ride though he really felt bad. His pain progressed throughout the day and his wife Leslie ended up driving back to camp. Back in camp the group finally encouraged him to make a late night run to the ER in Murphy where an ECG showed his heart was fine but the doctors wanted to send him to Asheville in an ambulance for further tests. Chip refused, it was Dixie Run week after all, and after they had given him some medicine and a prescription for the hernia he headed back to camp. The good news is that after taking Thursday off sleeping, recovering and medicating he felt much better Friday morning and was able to get back on the trails with us.

As most of you know, SFWDA is mounting a large “Rescue Tellico” effort in response to environmentalists suing the Forest Service to close trails due to sediment run off. While I understand and support Southern in their effort to keep the trails open, the results of compromise are disappointingly evident on the trails. The new bridge is in on trail 5 and paved with gravel past the camping spots on both sides eliminating the water crossing. The first difficult spot on Lower School Bus has been blasted and filled with dirt and the approach filled with gravel. The large ledge at the top of Slick Rock has been filled in and graded. Many of the promising rock erosions and mud holes have been filled in with gravel and finally in preparation for the bridge over Fain’s Ford, the rock ledges on the far side have been closed. All this, and more, may be necessary to keep Tellico’s trails open for OHVs but it may not be necessary. If the quality of the trail obstacles continues to suffer at the expense of environmental compromise, trail usage may decline anyway. From what I saw this week, it looks like the environmentalists will come out ahead either way. They either win their suit and close some or all of the trails or they force the Forest Service to reduce environmental impact by lessening the challenges of the trail system to the point where fewer and fewer people choose to ride there. As mentioned several times around the camp this week, SFWDA might better serve its membership by using the money and equipment they put into maintaining Tellico’s trails toward purchase of private land to develop for OHV use. Just some things to think about as we continue to lose more public wheeling venues yearly!

Even with the changes, Tellico still provides a nice challenge and we hit them all. Tuesday was a warm up run to Lower and Upper 2. Wednesday we hit School Bus, Helicopter Pad and Guardrail, Thursday brought on Slick Rock, Lower and Upper 2 and Guardrail and Friday it was back to School Bus and out through Pinch Rock. Make no mistake; Tellico still has its teeth. A Wednesday night run claimed Greg Slade’s front axle and a coil over shock as well as producing a roll over by a Suzuki in his group. During the week 3DKRAWLER suffered a broken accessory belt, upnover blew out a front axle ujoint and ripped his traction bar mount off the axle tube and Larry Smith broke a rear leaf spring center pin and flopped on Pinch Rock. Several other breakages were witnessed in other groups and Chip held up his rep as Trail Tool Man by helping everyone out with the Ready Welder, vise, air drill, air grinder, and assorted other implements of repair.

For those of you who have been following Chip’s NP231 doubler build and might be considering one of your own, it performed great! I have ridden with Chip many times over the years and the low gearing provided by the rock box allowed him to crawl and finesse many obstacles, which would have required throttle and the resulting bouncing and breakage in the past. The 231-crawler box is a super addition to an already capable trail rig and appears to be a great cost effective solution in the search for lower gearing!

All in all it was a great week! It was dusty but not as bad as recent Harlan and Uwharrie trips and showers Thursday helped settle things down. The turnout was the usual Dixie Run X-large. By the time I left Friday evening both camping fields were about full and Crawford’s was sold out. Traffic on the trails started backing things up on Friday but the other days the trails were clear. I lost count of the rigs I passed on my way home that were headed to Tellico so I’m sure it turned out to be another successful event for SFWDA. Maybe next years birthday compromise will allow me to stay for the entire event! Hope to see you there next time!

GREAT writeup!! I'm always amazed by your memory.. it's a helluvalot better than mine.. :)

so how many made the school bus ledge?

I got on just the right line in the middle and krawled it the first time. 3DKRAWLER made it the second time around with a little wheel speed up against the tree. It's getting to be a tough spot and provided a few breakages, tire issues, oiling problems, etc.

Very sweet. I wish I could've gone to this event, but my ish isn't done yet.

That's some darn nice journalism, Old Timer. And, as Rich mentioned, a very good recollection of events for an elderly gentleman. :bounce2:

Agreed, great writeup and great pics. I hope to make it next year if Tellico is still open.

This is a great idea, but from my understanding, even a private land owner can be held liable for water quality under the Clean Water Act. If I'm wrong, let me know. If I'm right, everyone is potentially screwed if the "Nazi" environmentalists decide to make a case against us. But I digress, this is for another thread.

It's hard to add a lot to what all John wrote, but I will try.

Tuesday was a short run up Lower and upper 2. I didn't try to beat on it too much, so I ended up taking the easy line after several attempts up the ledge on lower 2. Larry made it, so did Chris (the Blue Elliptical Jeep in the pics). On to upper 2 and we all made it fine, as soon as we found the line.

Tuesday night was pretty rough. I woke around 3am, chest killing me, and feeling strangled. Trying to heave something up to no avail. I finally was able to settle down for a few more hours of rest. When I woke I felt like death warmed over. But as John mentioned, it's the Dixie Run, and I was there to wheel. So, off we went. Hitting School Bus. John, Chris, Larry, David, Bill, Todd, Jason, and myself. John was the only one to find away up the massive ledge. Everyone pulled rope, but no carnage to speak of. We went over to Helicopter, everyone played up and down them, except me, I just took the bypass down Guardrail. At this point in the day my head was exploding, Chest felt like someone was standing on a pogo stick right at the top of my chest. and not much recollection of events from there on out. We drove on out. At some point I ran out of propane on the way out on trail one, and I convinced my wife to finish the trip home. I got back to camp, straight to bed. I woke around 10 and still felt as bad as I did when I went to sleep. My friends kept after me and finally I give up and went to the ER. Larry accompanied Leslie and I. They did all these tests, and finally told me they "thought" it "could me the hernia, or a slight heart attack, also blood pressure was high, yadda yadda yadda. So they treat my symptoms, and tried to get me to go to Asheville. I declined, and went back to camp. I will be making an appointment with my doc though to see what I need to do to keep it from happening again.
I rested up and actually felt human again mid afternoon.

Friday come and it was time to hit the trails again!

The trial of choice again was School Bus. Larry, David, John riding with Jason and myself headed via trail 4 over once again. It was Davids Birthday and he got a good one. He made it up the ledge. I almost made it until a front right Ujoint let go, and FUBARed both the inner and outer axles. Not an issue, had both. With the help of John, and David, we got it fixed and back together pretty quick. Then, one of the onlookers from another group noticed I had ripped off my traction bar! So out comes the grinder, and Ready welder. Fixed.

After we did School bus we went over to Helicopter and there were too many coming up, so we went over and down pinch rock. Once back to the intersection, Larry and Jason, and John decided to go on back to camp. David and I decided to go do lower 2 and upper 2 again. No crowds, and only a hand full of onlookers. We pretty much walked it all, and with in 45 Min's we were back on trial 1 headed back to camp.

Saturday for me was laid back. Hung around camp a while, then rode over to trial 2 and watched a while, back to camp, cleaned up, dinner, meeting, and the raffle.

The winner of the Ready Welder was Sammy Aldridge. You may know him. He and his wife are the ones who sell the Southern stuff at all the events. A very giving couple of their time.

Dylan Wiles daughter Macy helped me out by pulling the winning ticket. My son Josh was there, and about had a heart attack himself, when he came within 2 numbers of having the winning ticket!

Sunday for most was a day to pack up and leave. There were two more events. The slow crawl, and and the RTI ramp. Not too many showed up to compete. Long story short, I won them both! Two really neat trophy's though! Biggest I have ever won.

Home now(duh) and back to the grind.

Thanks to all who helped me, badgered me, and were there to help Southern.

Another great event!

Pics and vids will come later.

Great write-up John. Congrats on the ledge!

Jason's new ride is really cool, looks alot like Larry's.

Good to know your feeling better Chip, that has to be the worst timing to start feeling bad during DR. At least you still got to wheel some. I blame the 44's for the carnage :). Hopefully the new crawl box will ease up on those shafts a little.

They ledge looks pretty rough now, are they planning on tearing it down and filling it in too?

The wife made te ledge at lower2...finally I get to spot her, she listened too...
I think the best thing heard at lower 2 all day was something like "Secondgear, pedel to the floor, dump the clutch".
It was also, after watching some of the poorest spotting all day long, nice to see some one actually tell the driver the correct thing to do and then have the driver actually do it.
 to you big woddy & wife.
Also not a bad run by woody since he had a RR tire down, X2 on the

Does Bigwoody drive a red buggy? And does he tow with a silver Dodge Dually?
Who ever this is , he is a mad man!! He passed me on I-40, So I tucked in behind him and drafted some.
Whoever it was....I was in the red/maroon Exterra.
I pulled up beside the person and waived(thanks for leading)
It was a fun ride ,following drafting, and playing traffic like that.
Good driving!:driver:

My daughter Maycee and myself had a great time even though we left the jeep at home. We just wanted to support Southern,Tellico, and meet up with some freinds.Turns out I did great in the raffle having won alot of good stuff. The coolest thing was when Maycee won the childs raffle prize!!
A Nintendo Wii ( now, I gotta figure this thing out)

I was also overwhelmed at the amount of money raised during the impromptu" Bring up the money challenge" That was great.

Thanks to everyone that helped me look after my daughter, and all the folks that played with her during the late night, after bedtime raffle. We had a ball, and Maycee got to show off her new Tony Stewart outfit.

Thanks for letting Maycee pull the ready welder raffle ticket Chip !!

Traffic Sunday was as bad as I have ever experienced on I40. So many people would get out in the left lane and ride right beside the car in the right lane, backing up trafiic for miles behind them. DRIVE RIGHT people...use the left lane to pass only ,it's not a cruising lane, yes I know the pavement is smoother over there, but get the hell outta the way if you aren't at least going to pass the car beside you. When you complete the pass, get over. End of rant.

So that was you. Im the crazy guy in the exterra. Just wanted to let you know, so you didnt think there was an idiot on your tail....or maybe there was! Yes traffic was bad, but a big dually breathing down your neck makes em move over.
Good cruisin with ya!
