Not sure if there was an earlier discussion of this so I thought I would start a new thread so as not to highjack the engine swap thread.

I have not looked at the DMV code for a while but I think there is an exemption in the code that says if a vehicle specific emission part is no longer made or available from a dealer, you can spend $X (I think it was $75)or more on modifications and you are straight up leagal with the DMV. I think you need a letter from a dealership saying your vehicle is too old and parts are no longer available.

I 'heard' (don't know for sure) you also need to get a statment from 2-3? local junk yards saying the part isn't avaliable from them...

(also I thought the max value was $250 in parts, per year even if parts were avaliable and they will/can weive you. )

I guess I will have to start collecting my permission slips then.
