hey guys, i was really into hondas for like 3 years and i know alot about them, and i'm really interested in 4x4's now, can someone explain what all is in a lift kit? and what a locker is? i know i probablly sound like a total jackass, but i hope there's someone who will tell me :) thanks guys,
adam

Lift kit - vary depending on what you drive...

Locker - vary depending on what you buy (ie. spool, lunch box, full case, etc.)

A full locker makes both tires move at the same speed regardless if one is on the ground or in the air or mud or whatever..

There are two types of "lift kits" depending on the type of person. There is no way to describe the difference, but after a few years of being around 4x4s, you will just know.

A suspension lift in the simplest terms is just a set of springs that make the frame and body sit higher off the axles. This usually consists of stiffer and/or longer springs. The similar result can be accomplished by adding a spacer on a coil spring, or extending the shackle on a leaf spring.

A body lift is a set of plastic disks that you put between the body and the frame of the vehicle, raising the body up off the frame.

A locker prevents differential action of the tires on one axle. What is differential action you ask? Imagine a 2wd vehicle is sitting on the side of the road with one of the drive wheels on the pavement and the other in mud or wet grass. If the driver gives it gas, the wheel in the mud or grass will spin, while the wheel on the pavement will not. A locker prevents this by making both wheels turn at the same speed.

thanks ALOT man, that helped, so a locker is like an LSD in a car? if you don't know what that is, it's a limited slip differential, it makes both wheels spin at the same rate, used in drifting or just racing

actually...that's not what it is...

an LSD will "limit" the amount of slip...while a locker actually makes them spin at the same rate (depending on the type of locker)...

an automatic locker will "unlock" when you go around turns and it senses different tension on each side...

you can put an LSD in a 4X4, too...I ran them front and rear for a while...

some lockers are on/off...and when not "on" they are open differentials...while some are LSD's when not "on"...

You could consider a locker a no slip instead of a limited slip.

BTW, good thread for Newbie tech... You should post there.

Since this has stayed here, and not in newbie section I will go ahead and respond.

Knowing a lot about Honda's isn't all that bad. A few years ago I saw a buggy at Dixie Run, actually, several of them. It was KEWL! What they did was take a Honda engine, had it turned straight, and the axles become the front and Rear drive shafts. The tranny was locked, so it was full time 4WD, unless you unlocked the front hubs. If you run Toy axles or Dana 44's, with the gear reduction in the tranny, and the gear reduction in the diff's you have a mean little machine! Run 36-38's and you have great clearance, and the a great little buggy. If you use and older version you could go propane, or swap in all the wiring from a newer model and run fuel injection. I saw them in action on lower 2 and I have been wanting to build one since. Sooooooo since you are a Honda Guy, there ya go. Build it, and come wheeling!

haha, well, u know honda makes an 88' AWD 6 speed station wagon? i've seen them offroad, it's pretty funny lol

only problem with a honda motor is the lack of torque. don't really use those high rpm's (where the hondas make most of their power) off road in the rocks.

i actually had an 88 awd wagon with an itr motor and spray. broke more crap on that thing than was imagnineable. took the motor out, swappe dina dual cam zc, put in some junkyard springs from an older sedan for some lift, and got some cheap meaty tires. we used to rally it around my friend's farm until we finally destroyed it, haha. that thing was a beast with the weenie motor in it and slick red clay and mud!

-Erik <---- wishes that car was still alive sometimes

OR JUST GET A USED TJ,THROW IN A REAR LOCKER AND SOME 31.10-50 TIRES AND GET STARTED IN A GO ANYWHERE RIG.AS YOU GAIN WHEELING EXPERIENCE ,YOUR RIG WILL GROW AND LITTLE BY LITTLE RIDE BY RIDE YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE SPORT,DRIVING SKILLS,AND EGO WILL ALSO GROW.....ON THE OTHER HAND...AND MAYBE A LITTLE FASTER...YOUR BANK ROLL WILL GET SMALLER !!! GOOD LUCK
:stupid: +:bronco: +:bling: + =:driver:
