Droid

I looked at them a couple of weeks ago. Played with the 2 models a bit. Really liked it, and would be able to get rid of my PDA (mostly).

First off, I figured it would last about 2 weeks for me. I'm kinda rough on a cell phone.

Second, I don't need web access and all that crap. I carry my laptop just about everywhere I go, and have 3g internet on it. Plus can get online with my PDA whereever I have wi-fi. Verizon now makes you buy a data plan with any of the advanced phones. I didn't need it.

Anyway, ended up with a plain simple Convoy, and really like it so far.

thats the 1 the gf wants. but I think we have decided to cancel the ver. plan and keep the altel

i actually took the opposite approach - since Verizon requires the ful ldata plan if you have a Smartphne of any kind, I dumped the 3g card for my laptop... and instead just tether the phone to it. I like that better b/c i'm also not really tied to only having on-the-road access on a particular computer.

On that note, it's easy to tether and even broadcast your connection router-style w/ phones running windows Mobile. Do the Droids have similar functionality?

Sort of.
I'm not real happy with the tethering on my phone, but it works.
But just like with win mo phones(sprint/verizon), when tethering, you get no incoming phone calls. (Att can do data/voice)
I don't think any of them have the wifi router bit in them, but you're eating so much battery when tethering, you need it plugged in anyway, might as well just usb to lappie.

Yep, I decided to keep mine separate, didn't want to tether. I got a 3G router at the house that my USB modem plugs into when I'm home, so we both can be online together. I did talk them into unlimited bandwidth....Verizon now limits you to 5GB/MO on data.

I bought the droid and the droid eris. Eris went to my mammy and I got the full on droid.

The word, "Awesome" does not fully describe this phone. It is completely badass. It just does whatever.

First off, the phone is made to work with google stuff. I have mine synced to my gmail account. It just works. The cool thing is that when I am sitting at my desk, if my phone goes off, I can just look at my gmail acct on my computer and the phone will loose the notice when I check it. Smart.

My friend (who owns his own business and actually does all that "business" stuff with his phone) does all that gmail calender sync stuff. He loves it.

I have many apps, all free. There are craptons of free apps available.

Battery power is pretty decent. Of just normal phone piddling, I can expect about a day and a half out of that battery.

In the house I engage the wifi and then use the wifi, much faster than the network. I like it.

I tell ya what, on a road trip, it cannot be beat. I went to ATL and around lunch time, we were hungry. A burger was in order. I just hit the search button, then voice command and spoke into the phone, "Search burger joint". It came up with like, 10 within our immediate vicinity. VERY handy.

The google nav isn't *perfect* but in a pinch it is great. Now I am comparing it to my Garmin Nuvi 870, so compared to that, it sucks . But like I said, if you are SOL in the middle of nowhere, it is is eggscellent.

Now just a heads up! The verizon store will attempt to rape you on accessories for this phone. Example: Case: $30, car charger: $30, etc. Go online a week before you buy the phone and order all your stuff. I just got my case, screen protector and car charger shipped to me for under $25. So yeah, they will rape you at the store but do not listen to their lies. But like I said, order a week earlier so your phone is protected. Otherwise you'll be like me and walk around with your phone in a sock for 2 weeks. This is awkward.

Also look at the Body Glove case. My friend has it and it is cool, covered in a non-slip material. He reports it is already falling apart but then again he destroys everything. Hell he could great a 2x4" piece of box steel within 30 minutes without any help from a machine. Guy is just tough on equipment.

I went with a $4 hard plastic case. Looks EXACTLY like the ones they sell for $30 at the store. Just snaps on and boom, covered. Also nice because it'll just slip into my pocket.

Apps, jesus tap dancing christ. Too many but all handy. Here are some I use:
-Shazam (music identification),
-Family Guy Puzzle, Madagascar puzzle (for time wasting),
-Key Ring (you know bi-lo bonus cards and HT vic cards? This stores them for you),
-Power manager (tells me how much power I have and how to squeeze extra power out of it),
-The Weather Channel,
-Bubble (it turns your phone into a level)
-MixIn: Flickr (allows me to access my photos online)
-Chuck Norris Sound Board
-Chuck Norris Jokes
-Tip Calculator
-Barcode reader (scan a barcode on some merchandise and it'll google search for other prices online)
-Stopwatch
-Compass
-Droid light (turns on the light next to the camera)
-Schottgun (turns the phone into a shotgun, full of win )
-Facebook
-Pew! Pew! (makes the laser sound, PEW PEW PEW PEW!!)
-Timer
-Voice Recorder

It is pretty badass and I haven't even scratched the surface with apps. My friend like Pandora but I haven't come around yet.

The one thing that is weird is that once you open an app, it just stays open even when you navigate away from it. So you need to download an app called, "Advanced task killer free". This will close out all the apps, preventing the phone from crashing itself and killing your battery.

Now that last bit, I know that sounds like a hassle but it isn't. You can access the program and kill all your tasks faster than you can say, "Dana 35 axles are gay".

This phone is very, very computer oriented. If you are NOT a computer guy, AVOID. You just won't get it. But I think it is safe to say that if you are 30 years old or under, you'll take to this phone with no problems.

Not to knock on anyone outside of this age group, I'm just kinda throwing that out there. Two of my friends have this phone too, one (who lives in VA) went to DC this weekend. All the "young professional" guys have this phone. It is pretty popular.

The touch screen is nice. It just knows when you want to scroll or if you want to select something. Also most of the buttons are displayed REALLY big so that helps.

The camera is pretty decent, I am a photography guy so I was scrutinizing that pretty heavily. In low light the light comes on which is a godsend. It isn't a quick draw camera, takes a moment to get it to work, but that is alright. At 5MP, that can be worked with.

I like the Droid keyboard but my friend likes the touch screen keyboard. You can do either, whatever.

This phone requires a micro USB power supply, which is good because you can probably find a cord just about anywhere for it. Oh, the stock wall charger, for some reason, they decided that the cord needed to be like, 6" long. So if you are like me and put your charger under your desk, you are screwed. But if you put your charger on a plug in your kitchen which is 2" away from the counter top, then you are fine. Just thought I'd throw that out there in case you need a long cord, then you can go ahead and order it.

The youtube app (comes loaded) is awesome. Pretty much all I can say about that.

I've spent the last week on the road and this phone has been nothing sort of a lifesaver. People will say, "Oh, I am emailing you something" and right then and there, I can get it. Extremely handy.

The browser works...probably as good as it can. Not as easy as a computer but if you need to get on the computer, it works just fine. Oh, in web browsing, there is a zoom in and zoom out feature. USE THIS. It'll save you a lot of aggravation.

On texts, the texts become "threads" like on AIM rather than individual messages.

The Eris is more of a phone than a multipurpose toy. Its primary function is to make calls and is a lot easier to make calls on than the droid. It is a slimmer but the battery doesn't last as long. It is highly similar to the regular droid in terms of software so it is easy to go between the two.

I think it is easier to use, I got one for my mom and initially she had trouble with it but is now good.

Service is pretty damn good. Of course service in my current residence sucks, but it is better with this phone. On Thursday I drove up to Mt. Airy, outside of Statesville I lost 3G service so I couldn't do anything internet/google. It is fine but it was good to know. Last Tuesday I drove to ATL and didn't have any problems anywhere.

If you are techy kinda guy, your balls will explode from blueness if you do not get this phone.

On paying them, I just got the $30 unlimited data. Whatever, just do it. Then you don't have to worry about your phone bill exploding.

I have rambled here, but I don't care. I wish someone had told me all of this when I first bought the phone. I was sweating bullets when they told me the price . But it is so worth it. Normally, I am a cheap bastard. I bitch about the price of gas, price of paper, you name it. I bitched for like, 2 days on the price of this phone and then no more bitching. I like it and it is such a good piece of equipment it was worth the price.

The wife and I have HTC Hero son Sprint and love it. Fawk Verizon. We have had 3 dropped calls in 2 months. Verizon would do that in 5 calls.

I'm going to get the Droid. I have been on "Smart Phones" for too long and now I could not go back to a "simple" phone.

I've stuck with win mo...I like it. Palm Treo, Omnia, HTC Touch Pro(SUCKS FUCKING ASS) etc. I messed around with the Droid a few weeks ago and really liked it...There have been rumors floating around about Verizon getting the iPhone and I was kinda waiting around for it. Last I heard the iPhone will be on hold for a while longer.

. Last I heard the iPhone will be on hold for a while longer.

Don't let that stop you. Just find someone who can unlock the phone. Have a friend's dad who has a buddy who does it. Took a blackberry storm over to Tmobile and it doesn't give any of the issues it gave on ther verizon network. He's got an Iphone on Tmobile now and it works like a champ.

Myself persobally I have the droid. Friend of mine at Verizon demo'd one before they came out for a few days. Got to messing around with it and was sold on it. Mom and sister both have Iphones. Each have there pros and cons but I prefer the droid

You can't unlock phones from other carriers and take them to Verizon I've been told. They use a different kind of network.

I've had Alltel, Nextel, Verizon, and Sprint, and Verizon has been by far the best.

I've also heard the iPhone will be to Verizon probably next year sometime.

Back from the dead-

How's the Droid performance? I'm looking at getting one as a business/personal phone - linking it to my work email, etc.

My gf's bro has had one since last fall; the battery life on it has sucked, to the point of a 1-2hr run time (application heavy usage). Eventually he got a new battery as a spare

how's the run time? has it changed dramatically? what level of app. usage?

i have a couple of apps, but im on the road alot so i usually keep it on the charger, but there is an app you can download called advanced task killer and what it does is close out things you are not using, and i have noticed longer battery life after installing it

I have it and absolutely love it. First smart phone I have ever had and I will probably keep it at least a couple years. I had the katana with sprint for three years previously and obviously doesnt compare service wise or functionality. The only thing I do not like is the battery life and that is because I use the internet on it all the time. It is probably not the best business phone since it does not have push email and can only be used with gmail (I think). It also has a shit ton of memory for a phone which also comes in handy for video/pics and music. I never find myself using the qwerty slide out key board though so it can be a bit of a pain to text. But even if I misspell every word wrong it usually corrects it to the right word with the touch screen. I would rather have this than a blackberry. I also recently got the gps mount for the car and it seems to work great with the phone. But with the top off today, the screen was kind of hard to see due to the sun though. I love the google sky map thing also just bc it is neat.
