Dshaft yoke CHIPPED

Check out the BUG DIFF folder..towards the end I have several pictures of the CHIPPED piece in my dshaft yoke. The snap ring is actually fully engaged since I moved the chipped place to the open part.

What I was "thinking" about doing here was welding in some new metal (the wire itself or rod?) Then using a dremel/cutting blade, carve myself a groove in the new metal for the snap ring?

Any thoughts on this? (Is this part CAST IRON or is something I can weld 'easily'?

Welding the gap in the yoke will work fine just make sure you dont weld the groove shut.
