So if you want to put a Toy E-locker from a newer tuck into an older 80s truck/4runner, it can be done but requires some fab work to teh axle housing so it will fit. not an uncommon setup, but a bit of an ordeal for a guy w/o those kinds of tools/skills.
Seems it'd be easier to just swap the whole rear axle w/ 3rd, locker, and all from the newer vehicle into the receiving vehicle, but I can't find any mention of doing this.
I know the axles are wider by 1.5". I don't see that as a huge problem. What about the spring perches? Other differences?

measure,

Not that familiar with the Tacos, but the IFS trucks the rear axle was 1.5" wider OUT SIDE the perches, so there was no issue. just a little wider stance.

I did this mod to my '85 Runner when I had it

Hm, that is a good point, perhaps I should clarify my app - this is into an '89 IFS Runner, so it's be that "newer" axle.
Also - what trucks are these found in, and waht are the gear ratios involved?

E lockers are found in Tacos and RUnners from '96 on, they are 8" V6 ring and pinion.

Non locker chunks/axles in Tacos are 8.4" ring and pinion

As for the "wider" rear axle, you already have it , 86 -89 Runner, 86-95 trucks, 90 and newer Runners if you hack the coil and link arms off and install perches

Your best bet would be to find a Taco axle with the E locker in it, should be a direct swap.

But if ya ask a few folks, someone might be able to help you modify you current housing to fit the E-locker chunk and all you'lll need are the controls and wiring, and the chunk
