I've got a 78 CJ7, stock for the most part and have been working on getting it running. I replaced the carb, coil, and plugs, she fired right off and runs pretty well. The exhaust manifold is of the early variety, has a heat exchanger to warm the intake manifold. The exhaust manifold is cracked all to hell, do I have to replace it with the same type or can I use a later model one? My first guess was I could just slap the later model one on there, but upon closer examination it looks like the exhaust manifold and intake manifold are sorta bolted together under the carb. Remember this is a Uwharrie budget beater, so I'm not trying to dump a pile into it. I've located a new stock manifold for this thing for about $130, but I can get a later model one new for around $40. Anyone got any info , or a good old stock manifold (early or late if it'll work)?

The 4.0 exhaust manifold will work too. The intake and exhaust manifold are bolted in together as they share some bolts but you can just use a later model manifold. I know this b/c at BDOR show Nate Caulder (trailjeepman) had a 258 in his jeep for sale and it has the 4.0 manifold on a 258. It was an 87 258 and the ex manifold had an o2 sensor hole in it.

Good, your finally building a URE Jeep. It's way too much fun having a beater you can wheel with no regard up there.

Wait, thats how you do it anyway.

My brother has the stock manifold off his '84 sitting in SE GSO (took it off for a "dual output header...pffff! :shaking: ) He'd probably let it go for a 12 of Michelob... LMK

HAve both the intake and exaust manifolds. If I get your way anytime soon I will give you a shout and bring it to you. Or if you are comming this way. It's yours if ya want it.
