I'm working on Dad's '54 3B. My goal is to replace the rear brake backing plates D/T rust/rot. The CJ has the offset 10 spline D44 with the 2 piece shafts. I've got the rear hub nut off and the 6 bolts that hold the retainer and backing plate off, but can't get the outer hub to release from the shaft nor can I get the inner shaft to slide out. All I really need to do is get the hub off, but I've already broken one puller and beating it with the BFH isn't really accomplishing anything. Is there any special tricks to this or do I just need a better puller and have another go at it?

Takes a special puller.

Option to try is to put the nut back on...not tight, and drive it around the block. That is a tapered axle so it generally will work loose from rolling with the nut loose

Ya, I can see how that'd work better than the 3 jaw puller did. Driving the jeep isn't really an option since it's on jackstands right now, so the loose nut/driving thing isn't going to happen. Any idea where to find one of those pullers other than the web? I'd like to get this thing done as quickly as possible.

Yea. Said he got the backing plate nuts off.

Slide hammer should pull the axle outta the housing.

Jus be sure to put the nut back on the end of the axle before pressing it, or you will screw the threads up!

I've been steered onto the right path.[/QUOTE]
