my friend has an early 90s ford taurus. the problem is the tranny wont shift in to 2nd or up. it will go in reverse and 1st but thats it. i know there were a lot of problems with this tranny and i was wondering if anyone knew of a fix for this. thanks

Go to the junkyard, pray to the Gods of Scrap that you get a good one, and replace it. We had one with a slipping trans, and most shops wanted a mint to look at it.

your looking at $1000.00 to $1500.00 to rebuild that one or about $500.00 for a used junkyard trans the problem is those transmissions are only good for about 125,000 miles if your lucky. So what ever you get from a yard might last a year or more mabe less. best bet get a junker and then sale the car fast. Better yet junk the car and buy something new with the mony you would spend on that Found On Road Dead

I was going to recommend compwizz's latter option, but thought better of it. ;) I have seen Tauruses go close to 300k on the original transmission, but I believe most of them crap out much earlier. Always exceptions to the rule, though. I'd personally salvage the fan and anything else considered useful, and send the rest to the yard. Get something with a manual.

well i wish it were that easy. i myself am not a ford fan. ive always driven chevys and now ive gotten into jeeps. however the car is not mine and i am trying to fix it so we can give it to a kid to help him out. i was hoping that possibly some vacume or sensor was messed up. i have zero clue how the ford tranny works just know that the early ones suck.

Maybe you can get one donated by a JY somewhere. I don't know anything about the trannies, really, only that theyre garbage. I'm a Chevy man, too. Good luck.

If it is a 91 then you are SOL those trans are a real POS and they are 91 only. to put a different year trans is a PITA and not worth the effort
