Erik Miller Creates History in the International Endurance Championship Series
Cumberland, MD - July 10, 2010 – Erik Miller became the first ever competitor to capture the inaugural IEC series title in his rookie year at age 23. A second place finish at the Southern Missouri Off Road Ranch, the third and final stop of the IEC, gave him the points necessary to surpass current King of the Hammers Loren Healy and RCQ winner Derek West for the IEC title. With consistent finishes at King of the Hammers in California and the Rausch Creek Qualifier in Pennsylvania, SMORR became the deciding factor of the IEC.
The road to success began in February with a cross country voyage from Maryland to California to compete in the 2010 KOH event, the first of three races in the IEC. A fifth place finish in the 135 mile-long race on the West coast vaulted the East coast team from obscurity, answering the question “Who is Erik Miller?” This placed the team near the top of the initial IEC rankings.
As the circuit progressed, a home field advantage at the RCQ in Pennsylvania resulted in a second place finish for Miller Motorsports. “We are familiar with the park and knew where we could push the pace,” smiled co-driver Rob Ruggiero. The team battled dusty conditions all day long and fought their way through traffic to the front of the pack.
With a dedicated crew that dots the East coast from New York to as far south as Virginia, Erik acknowledges that a series win would not have been possible without consistent effort from those lurking in the shadows of the racer’s seat. “My co-driver spent eight hours plowing us out of the shop from the four feet of snow that the Nor’easter dropped on us just before leaving for KOH. I had crew members flying into California that had to change flight schedules due to this epic storm,” commented Miller.
Coming out of the team’s rookie season with the best possible outcome, Miller already has an extensive list of changes in both vehicle specifications and racing strategy that will make the Ultra4 team even more competitive when the series re-launches for its second year in February of 2011. It will be then that Miller Motorsports returns to California for the 2011 King of the Hammer’s Race with one goal: bringing the scepter east for the first time.
