Alright so when i bought the truck my guage lights didnt work at all...flashers and everything works but my guage lights wont...well they worked for maybe 2 minutes the other night then when i cut my truck off and turned it back on they didnt work anymore...my radio cuts off periodically sometimes for 2 hours and sometimes for 2 seconds...then my air and heat lights will go off sometimes too...my guess would be a short but where should i start if that is the case? and if not what else could it be?

I would try to get a wiring diagram and figure out if all of these circuits are shared in any part of the harness. If they are I would check that part for any chaffing of the harness and wires, they are fairly prone to this around the frame and engine compartment. Another thing to look for is if there are good grounds to all the circuits.

Pull your gauge cluster (its easiest access) and you should bee able to see the common ground (seems like it's high left center firewall on those0

Thats where Id start.

People use the wword short often, but what they mean is open. A short burns something up or blows a fuse, everytimee. An open will cause something to just quit working intermittently.

and an intermittent short will too.

Check the reastat (the wheel that adjust the brightness of lighting on the dash)could also be in the headlight switch. If it's an aftermarket radio check all the connections on it,it's common when trying to find short/open circuit to start there. Usually people who install their own tunes do a crappy job of wiring. If you still can't figure it out I'm in Greensboro, I'll do what I can.

Is the radio after market? I managed a stereo shop for about 5 years. Seen this more than once. If it's an after market radio and someone grabbed the dimmer wire behind the radio for radio ground it will also do this. This wire reads ground with the lights off, but varies voltage with the reastat, with the lights dimmed it prob. works, with rhe dimmer up, it doesn't have enough of a voltage drop to read a false gound. There are 3 wires that will read ground behind the radio...ground, the dimmer, and the illunation wire. Turn the lights on and read for voltage.

now he's on to something...

thanks for the advice....my dimmer switch works for the interior lights and everything and for the lights on the dash just not for the gauge lights...would that change anything or should i still start with the radio?

I'd start with the bulb in the cluster after you ck the radio, when it get hot it will seperate and when cools and is bounced around it will make contact and burn.
