So I've went thru 4 power steering pumps on my 89 Dodge Raider on 37's, and my 5th one has started making ugly noises. A front locker and 37's, the Mitsubishi pump just doesn't seem to have a sense of humor about turning those big tires. So I looked into the Volvo electric pump. I like the idea of it, until I did some more research. Running the pump in Limp mode at 60% doesn't sound like a great idea and annoying. Then I came across an EPAS kit that had a Bosch Motorsports Steering Wheel Angle sensor. Trying to figure out if the Steering Wheel Angle Sensor will work with the Volvo pump. It's more designed for non-Volvo Electronic Power steering pumps. But I'm having a hard time figuring out the CAN BUS wiring between the two systems. Anyone else ran electric power steering?

I would agree that heat is the issue here. Get a hydraulic assist ram and put a good cooler on it and roll out. You can probably throw a better tc style pump on it as well instead of going to the electric style pump seeing as you would have to do some modifications either way.

This is what I will be running with a volvo pump. Like stated above if your not running a ram your mechanical steering gear will always burn up pumps due to excessive heat. With an electric pump you will need a cooler and filter to help with heat and add fluid to the system.

when you add a ram you are reducing the system pressure given all other variables are constant (tire size curb weight etc) and you will greatly increase fluid volume going through the pump which helps with cooling. Adding a cooler will seal the deal as the increased capacity will take longer to heat soak and the cooler will actively shed heat. Bonus is that you will also have an active system that prevents steering wandering and shake to the point where it can actually cancel out death wobble if you have something loose. Highway driving will track straighter and off-road it will wear you out less

Tapping a steering box is free to the cost of a tap, $50 for a cooler, hoses about $75 and a few hundred for the ram and hardware
