Emissions exempt?

By law, it still has to have the OEM emissions equipment, it just doesn't have to go through the sniffer.

Yep, it is never legal to take off the emissions equipment, so theoretically not having it should make you fail the visual inspection.

That's assuming the inspector DOES the visual.

The vast majority do not.

There is no sniffer test anymore. Only the OBD II scan for 1996 and up vehicles.

So in effect, that's going to mean lots of 1995 and down vehicles with emissions equipment removed, since they all only get safety stickers now.

EGR valve present and hooked up
Thermostatic iar hooked up ( tube from the ex manifold to the air cleaner)
Gas tank flapper
charcoal canister
Catalytic converter if so equipped
pcv valve
full exhaust

thats all i can think of right now for your 77 cj

Sounds right based on first & only experience with the Emissions "nazi" 5 years ago... for my '72, even though the "book" only listed: EGR, Charcoal can, Vacc. operated flap in air cleaner snorkle, & Vac. advance on Dizzy... he appeared to go WELL out of his way to bust my chops over every other nitpickin thing...
E-nazi: "tail lamp cover has a crack" (not visible when illuminated w/o magnifying glass!)
me:"Well no $#!7, it's 30 years old!"...
E-nazi: "can't let you slide on the lack of shoulder belts" (only came with lap belts from Toledo)
me: "Uh really? How do you figure that?" (E-nazi quotes non-existant statute")

Now, she's exactly 35 years old from date of manufacture and current NC law says she's exempt from ALL inspections whatsoever (sniffer, visual, or safety) . Think I'll print out the statute, drive overand give him a few :flipoff2: :fuck-you:

At what GVWR is the OBDII exempt?

I got a F250SD, never had anything but the yellow safety sticker on it.

But I see lots of 3/4 and one-tons that have the red and blue??? They getting ripped off?

Yep, they are. Most 3/4 tons I've seen are over 8500 GVW, and don't get anything but a safety sticker.
Pretty much you should never see an emissions sticker on trucks that size.

Can anybody tell me where this charcoal canister is located? I pulled the tub last night and it ain't anywhere so I reckon I need to route one, or just try and get it to pass first. Maybe that's a better idea.
I have a place that let's me slide on my limmo black front windows so I am sure I can get the Jeep to pass thru.
Thanks
Kevin /TJ

The cannister is bolted to the firewall , right in front of the drivers feet. Hard to miss, its about as big as a coffee can. There should be a vent line between it and the fuel tank (mine was green plastic under the paint/gunk). Another line should run up to the carb, and I think a vaccum line to the manifold.

Probably not too hard to pass visual without it.
