Engine backfire

Hey guys,
I have a 96 Tacoma V6. It has about 250,000 miles on it and has run strong. It recently started giving me trouble in the mornings. Most mornings, especially if it has rained it has a hard time warming up.

When I accelerate it over 2000 rpms it bogs down. Once the temperature gauge gets to its normal place it starts to back fire when Im driving and then it seems to come out of it fine.

I just changed the spark plugs.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Paul :driver:

My 96 has done the same thing once is your engine light on if so check the gap again I closed mine up more than the spec's say to. Also if that does not help then check the airflow meter it is going bad (it is inline with the air filter it has a wire connected on top.)

I changed the plugs thinking it might fix it but it is still doing it. This has been going on for a long time. Its funny....it never does it in the afternoons when Im driving home ...it only does it in the mornings on the way to work. I put down the road under 2000 rpms until it warms up and then it start backfiring and then I have to really goose the gas up for a few minutes and it stops.

thanks,

Paul

Slipped timing belt? when's the last time that was changed?

I never had a miss while using the NGK/Denso dual-prong spark plugs that are specifically called for. Never touched the gap, either.

Oh, when's the last time your throttle position sensor was replaced? They're in a crappy location, and fail with regularity.

Has anyone thought about taking a reading on the computer? Or you can continue to throw parts at it. Sooner or later the combo of randomly replaced parts will cure the problem(s). When the crank angle sensor starts to go south, it'll give similar symptoms because they seem to become temperature sensitive until ithey fail altogether. But that's throwing parts at it again. Go find somebody that can read the computer codes, even if the Check Engine light isn't on. That's where you'll find the clues.

I bet it is the timing belt! I'll check the throttle position sensor as well!

Thanks!

AND you don't live all that far from me, I have a code scanner, would be willing to check them, maybe offer up a little advice.

Check your PM's

Kevin

I sounds like Timing problem or it is Runing to lean and not getting enough Gas.
Maybe Stuck Distributer weights that are not allowing enough Advance

Not sure about the '96, but my '01 V6 didn't have a dizzy. I'm 90% sure the '96 doesn't, either.
