I really need to give my 1991 YJ a good clean under the hood.

Looking at pro tips on what to avoid spraying directly on these engines.

I plan on using a 50/50 mix of simple green and a water hose. Not going to use a pressure washer.

I've pretty much used everything on everything, over the years, many times using pressure washer. Latest vehicle is 98 Chevy Truck. Car washes can be good to. Not sure if any still offer degreaser. Some vehicles are particular about certian electrical systems. Guess i'm lucky having only to dry distributor cap sometimes. I DO Know, dont get degreaser on the engine belts. It sucks the oils out, will start squealing, belt dressing is a waste. You have to replace the belts, if they dry out! lol.

i remember back in the day we used to cover the engine in oven cleaner and drive for about 20 mins and then spary them off at the car wash. talk about clean!

Avoid getting water on the ecm.

I've pressure washed my engines many times. As said above, just avoid directing the spray on the air intake, computer and distributor.

I work on dirty engines all day so when i work on mine i like it clean. I have found good old soap and water and old rag works great. Spray some puple stuff if you need to get rid of grease. After you have it clean all i do is give it a wet rag wipe down engine top hood underside. I off road a lot and my engine bay is cleaner than a new vehicle on the dealership lot
