Engine died in 89 4.0, sell or swap?

Hey! New to all this but i am looking for outside options and opinions on my situation.
1989 4.0l i6 died on a long trip, but by some chance there are 2 engines for sale in the town it died, another 1989 and a 1999, and ive heard the the 99's are a decent improvement but may require finagling to work.
I am curious on the opinions of those whove been here befor no matter the car, just swap the engine, and if so the 89 or 99.
