I am rebuilding my 83 cj7. I'm trying to get a game plan on what I want to do to the engine. I have never rebuilt an engine before, but I'm not afraid to try. I have been reading up on rebuilds and noticed a lot of people get a reman or crate engine rather than taking engine parts to a machinist and putting it together themselves. Any ideas on what would be the best route to take? If it makes any difference, I do not want to do anything half ass. I want to do what is best for the jeep. The engine is a 258 6 cylinder with 157K miles on it. It also ran with some oil leaks before I parked it 7 years ago.

I think more people rebuild their engine or just swap engines. Crate engines are $$ and most of us would rather spend the money on other parts.

I have read in a few places that it is actually cheeper or about the same cost to get the crate engine for the 258 rather than rebuilding yourself. Have any of you heard this or know if that is true?
