im in the market for a 90-94 4.0ltr jeep motor. im gonna take out the existing 258. im told that they will bolt right up. what i want to know is....who's the man/woman to do the job right? i have champagne taste, but a beer wallet. maybe even give up the 258 for the labor.
the 258 supposedly runs good. i just want to upgrade before i get it on the road.
any advice will help.
oh and b.t.w. its in a 76 cherokee with 3speed manual tranny, if you need to know.

Yeah, they'll bolt right up, you'll just need to make sure you get the WHOLE deal, wiring harness, new fuel lines, in tank pump, the whole nine yards...
On the other hand, the AMC V8s bolt right up, too. Get a good running 360 or a 401 if you can find it and throw in there. :driver:

i heard that the v-8's will bolt up, but you have to get some extra parts to make them work. i was just looking for the easiest way.

in a CJ, you need to change out one of the frame-side motor mounts to swap a V8/I6, I would think the FSJ would need a similar update.

When going to a FI motor, you don't need to go intank fuel pump, you can add an E2000 inline.

Well, whatever floats your boat.

You'll need all the censors and the whole nine to do the newer 4.0. Pick your poison. They'll both cost you either way.

true on the sensors. The external fuel pump allows you to continue using your fuel tank, no sending unit module swaps.

IMO the V8 swap would be easier and you will have better power for vehicle that large.

hell i may just stay with the existing 258 and call it a day. guess im just living in a dream world. maybe when i grow up ill change the motor over.
right now id be glad just to hear it run. i cant seem to get it to turn over. ive traced all the wires and then some. someone has gone thru it and pulled off wires and blocked off a bunch. its seems pretty basic though.
anyone wanna hear my problem? anyone wanna come to asheboro and look at it?
ill give you a hint, the starter tested fine and the battery is getting plenty of juice from both a jumper and a charger. ill post a separate thread to describe the problem
