My son Dylan who some of you know from the Gulches and the races he runs, needed a new engine for his sammi. I ran across a deal on a 1985 RX7 that had been wrecked so decided what the heck, we will try it. I started the swap about 3 weeks ago and took it for the first outing last Sat. to work out the bugs. It did OK, just some little thing and a coupld of things to replace like a slave cyl. Here are some pictures and a short video I took.

He needed a little more protection so I started on an Exo cage

I still have lots to do on the cage like gussets and stuff, but it's getting there.

I had some carb. issues, but I think I have them worked out now. A Short video of Dylan driving around the back yard. Dont get motion sick watching it. LOL

WOW! A rotary in a 4x4! Points for being different!

You won't run across anyone that has spare parts for that on the trail. hehe

You need some decals about how pistons suck!

There are few around in sammis, they are good swaps because of the power to wieght ratio. His was so different it was hard to get parts anyhow.

:huggy:
Yep, it has a different sound. Everybody at the Gulches last weekend for the race noticed it I bet. It is already street ported with some other mods too. It's around 175 + HP now. Thats a long way from the stock 60 in a sammi.

Yep. And the bonus is the damn thing probably doesnt weigh any more then the 1.3 it replaced!

I got my eye on a 81ish Toyota Starlet (RWD, Factory weight 1700 lbs.!) in friends backyard to do a ported rotary swap in. It is brown and ugly as hell, perfect sleeper. :driver: I'm thinking BIG port and maybe a little spray for about 300 horse and gutted out should weight about 1500 lbs.

I weighed it before I took all the emission stuff off and it was 10 pounds heavier engine and trannie than the sammi stuff. I bet I took 25lbs of crap off since then. They are suprisingly quick little engines with work on them. They rev up like a 2 stroke 1200cc M/C engine with 200 hp :driver:

Yeah I'm surprised thsi isn't a more popular swap for Toys too.
What's involved w/ mating the transfer case? Sounds like you used the mazda tranny?

I would imagine its gravy. Stock Sammi tcase is divorced.

the biggest problem is the intermediate shaft is only one U joint long. We havnt noticed any vibes yet, but we have only had it out twice due to the carb issues.
