Yikes!! I'm not there, but this oughta serve as a reminder that sh!t can happen anytime, anywhere.

yeah, i was just outside and heard sirens every few seconds from what sounded like the us1 south area. guess that's what it's for...

yeah, raleigh hazmat, holley springs, cary, and a ton of other departments are there, but its still too dangerous to do anything at this time.

Duane

How concearned should I be? My house (where my parents still reside) is located almost directly on the apex/cary line. I am headed back saturday to work on my jeep. Let me know, Tim

they have/are evac'ed everything east of 55, somewhere around half the town. cant say about saturday, the only thing i can say is watch the news. i know its late, but i would suggest calling your parents and informing them of the situation. apex has activated its reverse 911 system, but it wouldnt hurt to call.

Duane

according to the latest report I could find they are about 1mile from the point of the "1 mile radius" which they have told to evacuate

They just said on the news that the 911 system is down due to overload, and to call the direct numbers for sheriff, etc.

Did you hear the talking head on-site from WRAL a few minutes ago? She said she wasn't concerned until some explosions and then a hazmat crew ran past her -- away from the fire.

Town manager is saying that people are walking/sneaking past the fire lines and roadblocks to see the fire up closer (roadblocks several blocks away). They aren't allowing police/fire personell in the area anymore....to go in and make idiots leave.....Darwinism at work.

the town manager said on the news that if you are east of 55 you need to leave ASAP. they started with the one mile thing, but quickly upgraded it to almost half of the town.

Well I just spoke with them, They just got back from the state game, they are watching the news but think they should be alright. Said they didn't "smell" anything and are going to turn off the AC as directed. I appriciate all the info/advice on here. Down in Wilmington watching TV I would have never known anything about this.

thanks yall.

y'all get channel 5 (WRAL) or 11 (WTVD) in wilmington on cable??? ...I know can get one or the other, I think WTVD, at Ocean Isle Beach.

I get a WRAL at OIB as well, I get a WRAL affiliate here, but cannot find a WRAL exactly, Im sure thier affilliates dont show the same "live" things as well

Thanks, They are outside the latest "evac area" as off 1:0X AM

I have to take issue with the AC thing.. Every AC system I've ever seen is a closed-loop system, even the ones with the blower motor outside... It just makes no sense to me?

I could understand it if you were to take to one room as a "safe" room and duct tape the doors, window cracks, outlets, vents, etc. But not if you aren't gonna hunker down in a single room.

Yeah, but they probably look at it as marginally better... avoid mechanically shuffling the air around, make the vapors move on their own, etc. Few systems are actually 100% airtight. They'll draw outside air on the low pressure side.

So, yeah.... not particularly effective, but maybe better in principle.

makes sense..

i know nothing of residential hvac, but i have spent some time working in an internship designing commercial hvac

do home ac systems not draw ANY outside air? i know when i designed systems for offices and whatnot, i had to draw so much outside air to meet code, even if i was using small splits just like home units

is there no such thing for houses?

For the most part, no. The vast majority of home HVAC systems just recycle the same air. Some newer houses are airtight enough that they exchange outside air, but it's not particularly common yet.
