Newbie question. I seem to hear when I am going down a quite street etc that there is a leak/crack etc coming from around the exhaust manifold. I am wondering if this is common or if there is an issue?

beat me to it

When did the TJs stop having problems with manifolds cracking? I havent heard of many late models having the problem. I've got an '01 with 90k and it hasnt cracked yet. Should I be expecting it to?

I can tell you it was after '99. It's pretty easy to tell if you have the new style manifold. The old ones were pipes, looked like headers, all the way from the head to the collector. The new ones are shaped about the same as the old ones, but have a couple of accordian looking sections added, near where the pipes come out of the motor.

That being said, I don't think you're 100% safe even if you have the later manifolds. You just have less of a chance of having an issue. I say this because when my original manifold cracked, I replaced it with the new style. Since then, I've had a crack in that one, too. Andy at CRS welded that one for me and so far (knock on wood), it's been fine.

At first I was wishing I'd spent the extra for a header, but I've heard of those cracking, too. IMHO picking up a later model stock manifold off eBay is the way to go, if you run into this common TJ problem.
