My neighbor and I are planning to swap an Explorer 8.8 into his '90 XJ, what issues should we be aware of before starting? Oops, could a mod move this to the Axle forum? Sorry.

Straight forward, weld spring perches and shock mounts and your done, the 8.8 is 1.5" narrower then the XJ axle so a set of 5/8 or 3/4" wheel spacers would be recommended.

Might run into an issue with the rear driveshaft hooking up to the rear diff in the 8.8 depending on what you get it from and what type flange it has.

Thanks, I planned on getting new perches, and we're getting the driveshaft of the Explorer to make a hybrid shaft(XJ shaft, Ford flange) .

Get a 1310 to 1330 ujoint to mount the flange on the XJ shaft

that works to if your getting a flange with it the reason i suggest the spicer part is that it works with the jeep 1310 joint so he wont have a basterd joint in his jeep. also when i used the ford flange its much wider than the spicer and i was always banging the ears on rocks. if u need to get that flange i got mine from fleet pride for $26

FWIW, the drum braked exploder 8.8s use a 1310 flange adapter. They didn't go to the 1330 until the disk braked axles. They're plentiful in junkyards.
