Has anyone changed the spark plugs in an 05 f150 with the 5.4 in it? I was looking into doing mine, but read all fo the horror stories of them breaking off. I called the stealership and it was $380 for them to do it and the first broken plug was free. Add another $40 for every broken plug after that. The local shop won't even touch it.

recomondations? Shops to suggest?

Do them yourself and then pay $40 for them to do the broken ones?

Yeah - I know it's not going to happen. I think I read about a special took for those trucks somewhere.

I wish I could do that. The tool is almost $200. For a truck that I will probably change the plugs in once I can't seem to justify that....

I don't know if they do or not. I will have to look into this! Thanks for the ideas... Keep them coming

Napa has the best tool for removing the broken plugs out of all of the ones ive seen. It works even better than snap-on's tool. If you wind up buying the tool I would suggest the one from napa, its the one we use at the shop where I work, really only takes about 15 extra minutes if its a front plug (so far the only plugs I've had to break have been on the front four cylinders).

Spray carb cleaner into the plug chambers up to the bottom of the porcalin (sp?) insulator. Let it sit for a few minutes, break the plug loose then work it back and forth as you slowly loosen it. Ive heard both ways, change them on a stone cold motor, or on a warm motor (not hot), warm seems to work better for me (I let them run for 5-7 minutes before pulling them apart). I also coat the new plugs theads down with copper anti-seeze.

Tim C,
That was very helpful! Thanks for the insight! Not sure if this is something I trust myself doing or not, but I am getting some more courage!

I've probably changed plugs on these motors 20 times or better. I have found as well the tool from napa works better than anything. I can remember 4 times that all 8 plugs broke, I always let the truck run about 5 minutes or so before removal. Use a real good penetrating oil before you start it seems to help alot. I have also found that an impact wrench, believe it or not works pretty good at removing the plugs and not breaking the tips off. I don't recommend trying it on your first attempt but I have learned to use one on them.

Just my .02
