I've got a 97 F350 with a 460. I want to get a diesel. I was looking around and found a good deal on a F550. It has a Diesel 7.3 and it's 4x4. I'm wondering if any of you guys have driven one or have any comments about it.

2002 F550 4x4 XL standard cab 7.3L with manual trans and it has a Hydra-Bed. It's an XL, so that means base model, but it does have AC. It has 142,000 miles, but a diesel can take a lot more. I think I can get it for $12,000. It has a salvage title that carfax shows from 2003 when it had 34k miles. Whatever happened must have been serious, but the repair has lasted at least 100k mile since, so I guess it was done right.

Here's a pic of the truck.

Here's a pic of what the bed does. Looks useless to me.

unless you need to pick up an sbc or an d60

wish I had the money

Previous owner maintence is key, some work trucks are abused others have good fleet maintence. In my opinion a ill treated powerstoke is a costly adventure. At least its a 6 speed. 12 seems high i sold my 00 F350, 6 speed, work package with 75k on it for 12k a year or 2 ago. Assuming you don't need a 550 or that utility bed maybe worth looking for a regular truck with less miles for the same money. They get alot cheaper when they are reg cab, 2wd. Plus a salvage title is 50 cents on the dollar of whatever it is worth. Guys that repair them and own them will argue but ask any dealer 50 cents on the dollar.

I drive one everyday, 99 F550 7.3 6 speed 200,???miles rollback bed.
ride quality is great and it handles a load great
only trouble to speak of is the DAMN fan clutch, have to put a new one on about ever 4-6 months

00 had clutch issues the velahooeo:shaking: or whatever clutch will spit the springs also there was a change in the clutch release arm ask me how I know:rolleyes:

ride quality is great

Unless yours is rolling on full air suspension, you just have been riding around in that oversize suburban too long.

I've driven that exact same truck but in white for a couple hundred miles in ks. Rough ride, and it was very well used--it's a ranch truck--but it worked. And at least it isn't a 6.0. The hay bale arms can be useful and fun as hell as well... Otherwise, sell the utility bed for a profit...

I have a 2000 F550 4x4 "338K miles" with a fontain conversion and I love it. Lariat, air ride, etc. I'd say that was a decent deal if the repairs are still holding up.

i drive a f-550 6-speed everyday and love it. it pulls really good brakes great like i said i love it. when i can afford it i will be gettin one myself. it is awsome

you an find that truck - the salvage title for the same price.

Its all up to you on the title. if you plan to keep it forever then go for it. Just know when/if you sell it you will have problems

An F550 is one tough a** truck. IMHO The best heavy hauler for the money.
It will beat your fillings out, loaded or not.
2nd the awesome brakes.
Runs 19.5" commercial tires that are expensive but last forever.
I'm not too thrilled about the highway mileage I'm getting with mine, though. Loaded with a 14K gooseneck it'll do a little better than 10mpg, which isn't too bad, I guess. Trouble is it doesn't do much better empty, maybe around 12-13mpg. I think the 4.88 gears and the drag in that huge D135 rear end are killing me (4.30 was available, too). If I ever get the chance to throw a set of F-450 rears in it I'll do it.
