So I FINALLY got around to inspecting the 'yota and the guy fails it fo the tail pipe ending at the muffler. WTF? according to the DMV website, the only reason it would fail is if a) there is no Muffler, b) the muffler, tail pipe or exhaust have leaking joints, c)the exhaust or tail pipes have holes leaking seams or leaking patches on the muffler, d) the tail pipe end is pinched, e) the exhaust system is equipped with a muffler cutout or muffler bypass. f) Any part of the system passes through the passenger compartment. That is verbaitim from 19aNCAC03d .0541 (page 50) on the website. at the bottom it says "history note: Authority G.S. 20-2;20-39;20-183.3(9); Eff. october 1, 1994. I printed out the page to take back but thought I'd ask here first.

I beleive there is another section somewhere stating that the exhaust must also exit the side or rear of the vehicle clear of the body.

That it has a turn down right at the muffler would be justification, unfortunatly, you got an inspector who is litereral in interpitation.

going back and arguing with the inspector will only make him look yer stuff over more closly on reinspection.

If you do think you are correct, call DMV and inquire, they make the rules, we just have to play the game.

If the inspector logged his truck in w/ the computer, he has to go back to the same place for correction......atleast that's what I had to deal with.

he has to if he wants to just pay the other half the price. If you feel like plunking down another $30 you can take it to any inspection station around you want to.

Im not sure where but my brother and uncle are both NC inspectors and they told me my exhaust had to exit in the factory area in order to be 100% legal. But most inspectors just want to see it get close to the edge of the truck.

You can always go to advance auto and get a piece of extension and a clamp and clamp it on there for inspection then take it back off and return it.

my junk is gonna fail horrribly. looks like ill have to fix a bunch of things before the end of the month

I've got a turn down pipe that doesn't exit beyond the body or the side of my truck and my truck has passed inspection every time. You must have got a hold of a bad one. Try Jiffy Lubes or Colony Tires.

Jiffy Lube's and Quaker States are easiest to pass.

IN all reality you are supposed to lift the truck till all 4 tires are in the air... i dont know how they get away with not lift the the truck b/c you are supposed to shake the tires to check for steering wear, and ball joint wear, i think they can also fail it for bad cv's.

Went to the Jiffy lube at the corner of atlantic and spring forest. The one at plantation square was packed. I'm thinking of just getting a tip that turns down and a clamp.
