I ama sking about this for a close freind, He is going to be towing his 91 xj behind his camper with a tow bar, He is planning on puttin the t case in nuetral and the trans in nuetral, is this a bad or ok idea. or should he just disconect the drive shafts totally Thanks for youre input(auto trans)

I towed my XJ quite a bit last year and I just put them both in neutral. Never had an issue. Don't forget to to unlock the steering wheel.

You put the t case in neutral and the trans in park or 1st. From what I understand if you dont put the trans in park or 1st it can mess it up.

Question

Can you flat tow a 96 jeep cherokee 4WD 5 speed manual transmission

Accepted Answer

Yes you can.

FOUR WHEEL DRIVE: (4WD) vehicles can be flat towed with transfer case in neutral / transmission in gear (manual shift) or in Park (automatic).

Yes, like you stated already, MAKE SURE you put the transfer case in neutral. Having only the Auto trans in neutral will still have parts spinning in the transmission, but without the fluid pump running, which can tear up a Auto easily. If it was a 2wd with no transfer case to put in neutral is the only time I would suggest pulling the shafts.
