I want to put a th400 in my cj8. it has the torque converter, but no flex plate. Anyone know if another flex plate will work? By the way the engine is a 258 I6.

a Th400 behind a 258 would produce about 5 hp at the output shaft...

Why the 400, are you planing on a much bigger motor down the road? what t-case?

Would depend on *WHAT* the TH400 you have came from...

Chevy? = aftermarket adapter (bellhousing to block) & flexplate needed

Jeep? = mated to BW Quadra-Trac... aftermarket adapter needed to use any other transfer (mucho $$$) and a "throw away" in most folks book

Buick/Olds/Caddy/'67-'74ish Jeep? = needs OEM cast iron bellhousing & crank flange adapters (available) and new flexplate for 258 ('72-'73 Commando w/ 258 & TH400). Will need an adapter to run anything other than a D20 (2:1 stock or 3.15:1 w/ LoMax)

As Rich said... will rob 25-35HP from whatever it's behind and is about 3' long (bell to TC output... can measure the exacts if'n you'd like?).
OTOH, TH400s were used behind everything GM (SB/BB Chevy/Olds/Pontiac/Caddy/Buick) & Jeep (SB Buick & all AMC mills) could muster for years without any worries... as I was told "It's a 1ton tranny, in a 1/4ton Jeep, with a 200# nut driving... you ain't gonna hurt it". Lower 1st gear sets are also available...

Anybody have a better solution? I have Multiple Sclerosis and dont have the ability to use clutch for long rides. I have a dana 300 transfercase. I would like something to bolt up with no hassels(If there is such a thing).

A *Jeep*(AMC/D-C) TF727/999/904 will also bolt to the 258 directly (w/o adapter) and should accept the D300 (w/o adapter). I'm unsure of the flexplate needed, but should be doable...

I'm just not versed in those trannies.

I think the FSJ came with T400 and TF727 behind the 258s throughout the years, but as said, most had the QT behind them, so itd take work to use the d300.... some others that are more knowledgable might chime in, or you could try looking at the FSJ sites for more info...

Biggest thing is thee th400 for the QT will not bolt to a 300 or any other TC without either A) a customer adapter (read$$$$) or B) complete disassembly and installation of a custom output shaft.

If youve never seen one the output for a QT is comically long. it looks like a joke someone put together.

BTW for street use the QT isnt nearly as bad as its reputation...

The 904 (999) was the auto Tranny used from 1980 up in CJ's with the dana 300 Transfer case. They are typically inexpensive to rebuild and have good reliability. I'm using one behind a 401 in my Sunday Jeep. You must also have the kickdown/governor linkage for it to work properly like with the 727. THe linkages are different between 6cly and V8s. Lokar makes bith the kick down and nice shifters but they can be pricy.
