alright so i bought a 86 f150 with the 300 engine and the granny 4 speed about a year ago. it ran decent but needed work to be a drivable truck. about 2 months ago it started running extremely rich (stock 1 barrel carb) so i attempted to rebuild it which did nothing. still rich and smoking bad (black smoke) so i set out to get rid of the stock setup and do a little upgrading. i picked up a offenhauser dual plane intake at the autofair and bought a new 390 cfm holley carb. i got it all on but the truck is still running poorly its popping like crazy and has no power. the smoke is all gone though. it starts right up and idles decent just has no power under a load. it has new plugs wires and fuel pump.
o and this truck has electronic ignition (stock) the distributor does not have a vacuum advance
any help will be graciously appreciated

If it's popping, that makes me think it has a timing issue. Chain may be stretched, or it could need a simple valve adjustment. I don't know much of anything about these engines, but it's a starting point.

Thank you very much for your reply. I have done some reading on another forum and they tell me that all my issues are from the factory feedback carb system. It is a timing issue as the timing is controled by the computer which isnt getting all the information it needs, therefor I have to down grade the ignition system as part of my 4 barrel upgrade.

Some 300's have a steel gear drive timing system and some has the cardboard (ha ha). Some kind of composite? The composite sets are junk and only good for 100,000 at most. The electronic system is good if you have the computer setup to match and all is well. If not, you can pick up points dizzy's for nothing for these motors. Best thing to do is drop a points dizzy in to get tuned and then swap back to electronic. I'm pretty familiar if you need any more assistance, PM.
