Ok, I picked up a rig this past week and i'm in the process of going through it before I take it out... I have some issues to address and one being the rear end.

It's a 9" w/ 5.14's, Detroit, chromos, discs... The issue is I have a wierd noise when coasting (not under load)? kind of a whine but it doesnt sound like locker noise. I also have gear oil coming out both ends of the tubes and coating the rotors, calipers, pads, etc...

Anyone have some advice to offer to steer me where to start? I've never messed w/ a 9" before.

Thanks,

EDIT: I wanted to revisit this now that I've put everything back together...

I replaced both bearings w/ Timken Set20's (found them for $25 each on Rock Auto)... no leaks, spins freely, etc. New Driveshaft u-joints, etc...

When driving around 55+ I'm getting a loud whine... sometimes i get the same noise when coasting/slowing down. Seems to go away under load... but when cruising it comes back.. Is this gear whine? When i took everything apart, there were are no metal shavings, etc. in the gear oil. If it's gear whine I'm fine w/ it as long as it's not going to hurt anything if I drive it on the road some. I'm also assuming the only way to remedy the problem would be to setup new gears?

Any way to easily tell if something's wrong w/ the Detroit causing the problem?

got your email or PM what housing is it what style bearing. from your message sounded like gear noise, usually any noise on coast is gear noise if not gear noise its probably driveshaft noise on the coast does it have a CV shaft check the centering ball and ujoints closely angle ect whos shaft is it

If it's a big bearing housing the bearings on the end of the housing where the flanges are will be a larger diameter than the housing.

your leak is probably the wheel bearing seal. if the bearing is trashed it will leak, or if the seal was improperly installed.

if its just the seals its an easy fix. good chance someone replaced them recently and did some shade tree work in a hurry.
if its the bearings you should be able to put a jack under the axle and the tire will have play in it back and forth torwards the differential and torward you if you are beside the truck and you pull and push on the tire. this is what mine does and im told its cause all the bearings in my 9" are shot. it leaks from the front of the diff and the wheels had play them when i jacked it up to put my new tires on.
i said screw it and im gonna keep driving it like i stole it! been like that for over a year now.

May be incorect preload on the pinion bearings causeing the noise.
