All the ford guys what axle is this?It came out of a 1979 ford.I think it was a 250 leaf springs front and rear standard cab.The door tag said 6300 or 6700 gvw.I have a 60 rear and its smaller and I have never saw a 8 lug axle like this.

It's not the original axle. That is a semi float axle. Look in the lower right corner of the axle housing gusset near the tube and it should be empossed something like "60"

I looked nothing there. The center section is much smaller than the either ford 60 that I have.Almost looks like a dana 44 center?

That looks to me like a GM 10 bolt 3/4-ton semi-float rear axle that was re-drilled for probably metric 8 lug to run newer stock wheels? GM rears are a popular swap for 3.75 (3.73) gear ratios. Ford never had a 3.73 rear for a 4wd until 80's?
What gear is the front? Rear?

It not a metric pattern I tried a old 8 lug wheel on it.No tag on it.I am going to pull the cover tomorrow and get the numbers and call randys ring and pinion to see that they come up with.It had drum brakes but no drums.Wonder how hard they would be to find?lol I think its going to be an odd ball axle.I bought a dana 44 rear out of a 1979 f150 from broncomaina(mike) on here once and it had factory 4.30 gears.I called daynatrac on that one. They said it was a rare factory option in argentina.Thats where it was built.Hows that for odd ball?

Sounds like you nailed the King of all oddballs... Mike comes off with some crazy shit sometimes! :flipoff2: Dana 44 rears were oddballs in '79 from the get-go. I've only seen one with full dis-belief from a fellow who came to the house for some parts one day. I never mentioned anything to him but then I read the 44 was a rear option in 1/2 tons starting like in '79 or something.

Makes sense that it was the other way around now I think of it though. I bet the other holes are metric and the axle was re-drilled to be standard 8 on 6.5 to match the Ford front.
