Picked up a nice 01 Excursion , drove it about 150 miles and now I hear the dreaded rumble strip sound. Wanting to know if anyone has found a good source for the unit bearings. And hell no I am not doing the Dynatrac conversion:flipoff2:

Anything the dealer could have done to make it disapear for a couple hundred miles? Dont think so but I am kina paranoid.

Is that the same thing as a wheel hub assembly? I had to do one of those on my 01 Excursion too. I was really lucky. i heard the brakes making noise but I thought I just needed pads so I ignored it. Then one day I jacked it up to check the pads and the hub was about to fall off. I had drove it all the way to Orlando and back with expired tags too. I guess I was lucky and stupid. Now I know what that sound means to me. No help here on price since I got mine on base. those things have to be tightened to like 150 ft lbs or something like that.

Regarding the dealer, do a post mortem on the parts removed. Also, if one side has died an early death, best check its twin on the other side. Was it ever titled in New Orleans area? Either the parts assembly monkey forgot to add grease, used a Godzilla impact wrench at assembly or it may have stood in deep water for awhile. May want to check the gear oil for water intrusion.

My $0.02

ive replaced both sides on my F250. im sure running 38's on
12" rims didnt help either. but i got mine from from the local auto zoo. it was about 150 per side, but came with the abs sensor as well for the clocking ring. in either case, if you replace it, save the old hub assy. id like to have it so i can build a spare tire mount.

i learned the hard way they dont just sell the bearings, you have to buy the entire hub assy.

is this a 4wd ex. also, mine is a 00 F250, i think they both have the dana 50 up front

Are yall talking about the front or rear axle... I have a squeek in the rear axle on my F-350 and I belive its the bearings but im not sure

Quote from the stealership, $550. I can get the parts for $300+- and am having a trusted shop that has done quite a few before handle it. Probaly $400-450.
Fawk. I only put 150 miles on it sinci I bought it:rolleyes:

how bout you save some money and lets do it in your driveway! not only will you not have to pay labor, but not have to go a day, or even a couple with it at the shop. the bearings that I have been typing about have been in the front, (i read a post about a rear axle on an F350). but is this a 4wd EX? let me know

Do it yourself. It is pretty easy and can be done with basic hand tools. If it went bad after 150 miles sounds like they didn't tighten the axle nut tight enough. I went through 4 of them before I found out how tight they had to be. Since I tightened it super tight no problems. If you were on the east side of NC I would help you do it.

Well good news. Drivers lockout had grenaded. A set of Warns and good to go for less than $200. Bearing assembly was nice and tight, still around 200 ft/lbs.
Now on to the gauges, exhaust, intake and DP Tuner:beer:

Well they did actually shit the bed and need changing. 1 call to Wabash (Diesel Performance) for the unit bearing "kit", has ALL seals/ parts you need.. $330 delvd.

But it took 4 hours to get the damn thing off it was rusted so bad. 4 ton Porta Power w/ spreader jaws didnt work (blew seals out) so I had to heat the knuckle up to beat it out. It really sucks putting the blue wrench on a new to you truck. Toughest job I have done yet. The next one will go to the shop or I will buy a new truck.
