My son is based at Bragg, the motor on his 2001 XJ gave up the ghost. Its the 4.0. Can anyone help me find a good place to get it rebuilt? Im also open to complete motors for a swap if anyone has one. I moved out to Kansas last year so im pretty much out of the picture. Really appreciate any help we can get.

Any idea what exactly broke? Is it running but knocking? Barely running? Or rod out the oil pan?

Allison Machine shop in Asheboro has done work for me in the past with no issues.

Ted's Machine shop in Carthage is really good but he's a 70-year old, one-man place so it'll take awhile for him to get it done.

Both of those suggestions are only good if your son already has the engine out of the Jeep.

Its down to zero compression in the #5 cylinder, barely running with no power. Unfortunately he doesn't have the facilities or tools to pull the engine on base so this will be a lot for anybody who wants to tackle it

There are 2 on post shops he can use through the MWR program. Take a quick class, get your card and know the hours and rules. If he is at all capable or has some buddies he should be able to knock it out. There is a decent salvage yard just up the road in spring lake (Sandhills pick and pull??) I’d say a reasonable used would be the fastest. Line everything up and should be a weekend project. Being an ‘01. I think those were the crappy years for cylinder heads cracking. Could be why he has no compression in #5. When he cranks it are there bubbles in the radiator or overflow?

Yeah, I have a shop in Bear Creek, north of Sanford really close to @Stuntman Autoworks. Unfortunately, life has me pretty busy nowadays and I don't have the free time to assist with an engine R&R. I even have my own XJ sitting next to the shop that needs an engine swapped in it and I haven't had time to mess with it for months.

Can't help with any suggestions for shops that I'd recommend either.
