Found a dog in the bushes this morning

A sweet, older boxer mix was curled up in the leaves between the neighbor's house and the bushes this morning. I think he spent the night there... he was good and chilled.

Another neighbor was out with his dog, so once ours were back inside we put a blanket over him and coaxed him out. Got him to eat some warm oatmeal and an egg and he's curled up on that blanket back in our sunroom. Not knowing his background or what vaccinations he's had, I'm keeping him separated from mine for now. We're going to take him to a vet on the slight chance he has a microchip...

So I haven't called him anything but 'buddy' and 'good boy', but "Santa's Little Helper" comes to mind. My neighbor and I took him to Hayes-Barton Vet Hospital to be scanned, he has no chip.

This boy is very sweet and did well in the car and on a leash. He has been well-mannered inside. He encountered a couple of dogs at the vet, just from across the room, but didn't react or lunge or anything. We attempted to introduce him to my dogs and he did react, but they are bigger than him... so maybe with everything else he's done today he was tired and felt cornered. He did react more strongly to my female than my male (both mine are neutered, he is intact), but I'm not going to try again without my neighbor's help and he had plans with a lady friend.

So, for now, he'll stay in the sunroom... he's found the chair and ottoman to curl up on! Especially given the weather forecast, he'll hopefully be okay there tonight. Don't know what we'll do with work this week and then traveling for the holidays, though. He may just have to go to the Wake County Animal Shelter... a friend told me they are 'no kill' now, so that's a relief. I just hate it that he's lost or maybe unwanted because he is very sweet and seems to know enough that I think he's come from somewhere.

I have a friend who has worked for animal control most of his life.I also got him signed up for the forum. If you want answers about how a no kill shelter works than I can get him to PM you.My understanding is that if you surrender a dog, they don't have to hold it at all and it's usually the first put down. The strays they find stand a better chance but it's still an alarmingly high kill rate.Just food for thought,I would try to find the guy a good home if he's a sweet dog.

I work at a Humane Society which is a "no kill" shelter. We get the "best" dogs/cats that have a chance. That only means they do not put animals down for the sake of it, unless severely sick. Animal Control takes care of that. In my opinion it seems he will have a good chance of not getting euthanized seeing how hes reacted well to people/other animals. You could try Craigslist and see if someone lost their boxer. I know there is a Blue Ridge Boxer rescue center in NC. Good luck with everything.

I'd appreciate it. Any advice would be great. I definitely hate the idea of anything (else) happening to the poor guy... but we just can't keep him here more than a couple of days. Both ours are from rescues and we've rescued and fostered other dogs in the past.

google boxer rescue and I'm sure you'll find a rescue that will take it.

I did find the Carolina Boxer Rescue and sent them a message (along with a bunch more local to Raleigh). I had forgotten about them, we knew someone who fostered for them a while back...

I did check CL and didn't find any notices about a missing dog there.

Well Thank God for y'all taking him in.Sounds like he has a great fighting chance for the best possible outcome with you in control.I will e-mail my buddy and ask him to write. There is a good chance he might consider fostering him for a little while. They just lost a boxer they had for a long time and I know they hold a special place in his heart.

that is awesome you are so caring!! The world needs a lot more people like you!

Do you work at the one in Boone?

If so, shoot me a PM about it! Ive been there constantly the last two weeks or so checking things out and Im interested in a dog there but I wanna give it some more walking time before I decide.

Great job giving him a home, even if temporary, but I bet in the end it will be more than that

Please do! If someone (especially with a rescue connection) could foster him and get him checked out by a vet, it might give him the best chance to get evaluated for health and personality quirks (he's def. a little timid with men at first, but warms up) and find a good place for him!

There was a couple that came into the vet's office while we were there who are definitely interested... they have one dog and have been thinking of getting another but aren't sure what to do with him just now since they'll be traveling this week for the holiday... they did ask me to give them a call when we figured anything out.

Your a good person honestly man, few ppl would do anything. My g/f works at an animal clinic, So if you dont find a home for him get in touch with me and we'll se what we can do. We find homes for dogs all the time. My dog's a rescue. Just please dont turn him into the pound. someone will take him.

Thanks, I'll keep you posted. Several people in our neighborhood have said they might be willing to consider taking him in, at least over the holidays, depending on how he might interact with their dog(s).

24 hours has made a huge difference in this boy, from timid to playful. He and our dogs just met noses at the door a bit ago and everyone was polite and wagged tails, so I definitely think the situation played a big role in yesterday's reaction when we first tried to introduce them.

Stories like this makes me feel all mushy inside, I'm a dog lover at heart. Makes me feel good that this is gonna work out for the dog and every body involved! Our dog was rescued by my wife and I in Tennessee three years ago........But I gotta ask, why you snooping around in you're neighbors bushes in the first place? I'm just saying.

I'm like everyone else... BLESS YOU for taking this guy in, even if it's only temporarily. I've "fostered" several dogs and adopted a few more plus a cat from the shelter. The latest fosterchild was a chow mix my daughter found beside the road one cold night. Just like the rest he's still right there with us. I'm going to have to build another house just for the critters at this pace, lol.

Maybe things will work out so you can keep him. Either way you've done a wonderful thing for him!!

LOL... it was my dog snooping around in the bushes! It's an old neighborhood and the houses aren't very far apart, either. ;)

The good news is a neighbor was able to take him (he got along well enough with her dog) for the week, since we and everyone else we know are leaving town for the holiday. :bounce2::bounce:

:popcorn:LOL
