Frame Question

I am rebuilding a CJ7 1978 model jeep. I am ready to attach the axles and such to the frame however, i need to replace some bolts. I was wondering if anyone on here knows what size bolts I should use when attaching the "bushing bracket" (not sure if that is what it is called) to the frame? But it is the bracket that attaches to the frame and then the shackle attaches to the bracket and so on. Any suggestions?

Welcome to NC4x4.

How was the bracket originally attached? that is going to be the way that you want to reattach it. I'm pretty sure that those are welded to the frame. If you have a reverse shackle then it should have some instructions on how to mount it. However if you can't weld you could probably get some 1/2" grade 8 bolts and bolt that sucker back on. I prefer grade 8 on suspension because it takes a lot of abuse.

that's what i was thinking. im not exactly sure how they were attached in the first place. the guy that i bought the jeep from was in the process of a complete rebuild only he got as far to take everything apart and put nothing back together. this is a learn as i go project also so i dont know much about vehicles but am learning.

Do you have any pictures of the frame and the bracket that you are wanting to attach? Does the bracket have any holes in it other than the one for the suspension bolt?

Yes it has two holes in it and it lines up with two holes on the underside of the frame, i am sure that it bolts on or atleast it makes sense that it would. I am just not sure of what size or type of bolts it would need. I dont have any pictures of it at the time.

a Few random thoughts.
Are we working front or rear axle here?
I am not aware of any shackle hangers that bolt to the frame, in stock trim.
*IF* they did, I would want to sleeve the hole and plate the outside to keep a grade 8 from ripping the frame

can you weld? thats the easiest option but if not I think the bolts on my cj were 1/2 by 1 in but if the nut that is in there has rusted out it is either a pain or an impossibility to hold the nut on the inside while you tighten from the outside

I think the stock CJ main eye spring hangers were welded in place. The shackle spring hangers were riveted in, I think.

Just weld them on there

The fixed mounts were rivited. If its these...reweld them. If its the shackle mount they are bolted. Should be a 7/16 bolt. 5/8 head. I would def rebolt them.
