freakin door handles

ok got an 83 toyota pickup trying to switch tthe outside door handles to some that actual work. Cant get the stupid things off. Do i need to break that plastic peice or do I just need to push harder till it pops off the little arm thing?

Any help will be appreciated and yes I know it is a stupid question but it has now pissed me off. and I dont want to break it befor i know if I should or not.
 
I think you twist the little plastic piece so that the arm of it pops off the rod, then pull the end of the rod out of the plastic piece.
