The "free spool" rotating switch on my Ramssey REP8500 winch is stuck, e.g. I can't get it into the "out" position, so I have to use the motor to unspool the wire. It's stuck enough that in trying to force rotating the lever, the plastic tab broke off.

Before I go tearing it all apart, is there a common cause for this I should be looking for?

how old is your winch, if it is realitivly new you have to use it quite a bit to get the grease worked around enough to loosen the freespool and clutch up, i had the same problem with mine but it is great now that i have gotten about 10 good pulls in with it, mine is an 8k smittybilt

One of the springs has probably moved out of it's hole. Pull the 6 screws out of the end and clean ot out good, put the springs back in and you should be good. Just look for any broken parts when you are in there. They are pretty easy to work on.
